Sustained Bronze Age Agricultural Practice at the North Sea Coast
The Nordic Bronze Age (1700–500 BCE) was a period of profound socio-cultural transformation, evidenced by the interment of elites in mortuary monuments and by novel participation in wider European exchange networks. Emmer, spelt and naked barley were staple crops cultivated throughout the Bronze Age, with other cultivars added to the agricultural repetoire and permanent fielding systems installed by the mid-first millennium BCE. However, little i…
Identifying Late Palaeolithic Pull-Factors in Lieth Moor, Northern Germany
Multiple ponds replace the idea of a large lake in Late Pleistocene Lieth Moor. Red sediments probably played a key role in Late Palaeolithic settlement patterns
Bone Points in Time
Bone points were one of the major hunting implements in northern European hunter-gatherer societies. They differ in shapes, types, and manufacturing techniques. In this paper, we investigate 22 bone points from the territory of Lithuania, by studying their morpho-technological characteristics, direct dates, and adhesive residues. The majority are isolated finds, but four points were selected from excavated archaeological sites dated between the 5…
Everyday Life at Bjerre Site 7, a Late Bronze Age House in Thy, Denmark
Bjerre 7 is a modest Late Bronze Age house in Thy, Denmark. Excellent preservation and full-recovery techniques provided comprehensive evidence of farm self-sufficiency, local exchange, and amber collection for trade. Spatial analyses of ceramics, lithics, plant macrofossils, and amber identified distinctive activity areas at both ends of the house and outside. Routines are discussed for refuse disposal, ceramic use in everyday activities, ad hoc…
Investigating lake sediments and peat deposits with geophysical methods - A case study from a kettle hole at the Late Palaeolithic site of Tyrsted, Denmark

The First Eastern Migrations of People and Knowledge into Scandinavia
In this paper a team of Scandinavian researchers identifies and describes a Mesolithic technological concept, referred to as ‘the conical core pressure blade’ concept, and investigates how this concept spread into Fennoscandia and across Scandinavia. Using lithic technological, contextual archaeological and radiocarbon analyses, it is demonstrated that this blade concept arrived with ‘post-Swiderian’ hunter-gatherer groups from the Russian plain …
Lithic Raw Material Economies in Late Glacial and Early Postglacial Europe
Lithic analyses of all kinds have a long history in archaeological studies. For many years, morphological studies of tool-types and elaborate discussions of relative chronologies were a primary focus, but this has changed and the past few decades have witnessed a steadily growing interest in many other aspects of lithic studies. The 12 papers in the present volume provide a variety of perspectives on lithic exploitation patterns in late glacial a…
Humans at the End of the Ice Age
Resource Exploitation, Subsistence Strategies, and Adaptiveness in Late Pleistocene—Early Holocene Northwest Europe
Humans at the End of the Ice Age
Palaeolithic bone and antler artefacts from Lateglacial and Early Holocene Denmark
The Danish Palaeolithic began during the Lateglacial (approximately 12,350 calBC) and lasted for about four thousand years. Only a handful of sites and organic stray finds have been precisely dated. And it is primarily on these that a preliminary chronological framework has been built. Similarly, numerous hypotheses on palaeohistory, typology, and settlement patterns have been proposed. However, due to the preservation of sediments that allow the…
