  • The Arab Community in the United States: A Review and an Assessment of the State of Research and Writing on Arab Americans

    Michael W Suleiman•ARTICLE•British Journal of Middle Eastern…•2010

After a review and brief history of the Arab American community, a detailed overview of the research and writings done on Arabs in the United States is presented, which includes references to two early Arab arrivals to the United States: Estevanico and Hadj Ali (Hi Jolly). These two pioneers are mostly ignored by the Arab American community (as well as researchers on that community) but should be embraced and celebrated. An assessment of the writ…

  • Changing attitudes toward women in Egypt: The role of fiction in women's magazines

    Michael W Suleiman•ARTICLE•Middle Eastern Studies•1978•References: 1

In general, it can be said that in almost all cultures and throughout recorded history, women have been socialised to accept the more traditional and conservative views and to engage in a clearly specified and limited number of activities, usually associated with the household. Social change in a particular era or a specific geographical region, therefore, can most fruitfully be studied through an examination of changes in the role and status of,…

  • Values Expressed in Egyptian Children's Readers

    Open Access•Michael W Suleiman•ARTICLE•Journal of Cross-Cultural…•1977•References: 8

Several hypotheses concerning values and societal development, with special reference to Egypt between 1952 and 1972, were tested. Content analysis of stories in Egyptian children's readers for the pre- 1952 period and the 1972-1973 academic year showed no significant rise in achievement, affiliation, or power imageries and no significant decline in moral teaching in the later period. Two main arguments were offered to explain why the results of …

  • National Stereotypes as Weapons in the Arab-Israeli Conflict

Michael W Suleiman, Michael Suleiman•ARTICLE•Journal of Palestine Studies•1974•Cited by: 1

Nations in conflict generally internalize a stereotype of their enemy that consists exclusively of evil or contemptible characteristics, but, on the other hand, of themselves and their allies as possessors of the best human qualities. In the battle to win the hearts and minds of world public opinion, each side attempts to transmit its own stereotypes of the other to third parties, and the result may well be to influence the policies of the latter…

    Open Access•Michael W Suleiman•ARTICLE•American Political Science Review•1973•Cited by: 6•References: 12

The sources include the relevant political literature, especially since the 1967 war; a set of depth interviews conducted among members of the elite in the Arab world; and a more struc…

    Open Access•Michael W Suleiman•ARTICLE•The Western Political Quarterly•1967

HIS PAPER EXAMINES the role of parties in Lebanon, a country with a type of democratic system not familiar in the democratic West. The first task, therefore, will be to present a brief account of how confessional democracy operates in Lebanon and to arrive at a definition of political suitable for the purpose. After stressing the minority characteristic of all parties in Lebanon, a distinction will be made between and trans-national parties. This…

    Michael W Suleiman•ARTICLE•Middle Eastern Studies•1967•Cited by: 1•References: 1

Though the mutasarrifiyah of Mount Lebanon was the envy of the neighbouring Turkish provinces from 1860-1914, the situation changed rapidly and adversely after the start of World War I. The saniaq of Lebanon lost its autonomous status (and with it its privileged position) in October, 1915. The war years were bad all over the area but the Lebanon was hit hardest. Its tourists and summer visitors vanished, contributions from emigrant Lebanese were …
