How local health departments use wastewater surveillance data for public health planning and intervention in New York State
Wastewater surveillance presents a novel data stream for local health departments to understand infectious disease risk in their communities. We conducted a survey of local health departments in New York State regarding their knowledge, attitudes, and practices toward wastewater surveillance of SARS-CoV-2. We further conducted in-depth interviews with a number of local health departments to identify specific use cases of wastewater surveillance d…
Risk Factors for Injuries in College Football: A Systematic Review
This systematic review examines risk factors for injuries in college football. We reviewed published manuscripts of original studies (1979 -2021) that examined risk factors of injuries among National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) football players. The risk factors for NCAA football related injuries are interrelated and multifactorial inlcuding player characteristics and attributes (such as player position, history of injuries, fatigue, a…
Access, Privacy, and Technological Challenges of Delivering Cardiology Care via Telehealth: A Systematic Literature Review
The use of telehealth has emerged as a transformative force in healthcare, promising to expand access and reduce costs across various medical domains. The COVID‐19 pandemic catalyzed a rapid and extensive adoption of telehealth, shedding light on both its challenges and opportunities. As the telehealth landscape evolves, individual medical specialties grapple with unique obstacles. This review aims to synthesize recent literature focusing on the …
Economic equity and people with disabilities: Development and characterization of a novel index
Here, we develop two new social indices: the ADA PARC Absolute Economic Opportunity Index and the ADA PARC Relative Economic Opportunity Index. These indices allow us novel examinations of economic equity between people with and without disabilities within a U.S. state and between people with disabilities in different states using aggregations of multiple component economic indicators. These represent the first efforts to offer U.S. indices of th…
Head Impact, Concussion, and Salary in the NFL: Is There a Compensating Wage-Risk Premium
Sport epidemiological studies have estimated cumulative head impact and concussion rates by American football position group. Meanwhile, the sports economics literature has examined National football league (NFL) player-salary variation, and sports statisticians have studied NFL player productivity. Merging novel data and methodologies, we estimate whether players in position-groups with higher head impact or concussion risk are paid a compensati…
Food sovereignty and displacement: Gardening for Food, Mental Health, and Community Connection
In this paper, we assess factors that underlie the relationship between gardening and improved mental health and food security outcomes among displaced people. Drawing on a mixed method study of refugee gardeners in New York, we argue that a food sovereignty framework better incorporates crucial factors such as cultural appropriateness of food, autonomy over food choices, and promotion of health and community, as compared with a food security ana…
Role of Gardening in Mental Health, Food Security, and Economic Well-Being in Resettled Refugees: A Mixed Methods Study
Executive Summary Home and community gardening is emerging as a beneficial intervention for resettled refugee populations. Using an interdisciplinary lens, we examined whether gardening influences mental health, food security, and economic well-being. A mixed methods study ( n = 29) was conducted with quantitative surveys to assess indicators of mental health, food security, and economic well-being. Qualitative, semi-structured interviews explore…
Exploring soccer video games as a channel to promote well-being and soccer appreciation among North American adults
Based on online surveys and MANCOVA, this study explores soccer video games as a potential channel for promoting well-being and soccer appreciation by testing how playing soccer (1) via video games, (2) physically, (3) in both forms, or (4) in none of the forms are associated with soccer appreciation (enjoyment/involvement), physical health (moderate-/vigorous-intensity activity, sedentary behaviour), and mental health (happiness, life satisfacti…

Community-level impacts of sanitation coverage on maternal and neonatal health: A retrospective cohort of survey data
Introduction Access to sanitation facilities (toilets or latrines) greatly improves human health. Low community sanitation coverage may lead to increased exposure to pathogens for households both with and without a sanitation facility. Methods We created a retrospective cohort using Demographic and Health Surveys from 1990 through 2018. Using regression with matched women as a random intercept, we assessed the association between community-level …
Age at League Entry and Early All-Cause Mortality among National Football League Players
An earlier age-at-entry is associated with an increased hazard-of-death among NFL players. Currently, the NFL regulates age-at-entry only indirectly by requiring players to be 3 years removed from high school before becoming NFL Draft-eligible. Implementing a minimum age at entry for NFL players of 22 years and 4 months at beginning of season is expected to result in reduced mortality. What is known about this subject? There are no prior studies …

Women executives and off‐the‐job misconduct by high‐profile employees: A study of National Football League team organizations
The risk of off‐the‐job misconduct by high‐profile employees is a serious concern of top management in professional sport organizations, media and entertainment companies, and public‐facing entities in the government and education sectors. Yet there is little research on how to prevent or mitigate this form of misconduct in organizations. Utilizing upper echelons theory and the literature on demographic composition, we examine the relationship be…
National Emissions Standards, Pollution Havens, and Global Greenhouse Gas Emissions
The present study shows that the availability of “pollution havens” can negate the effect of national legislation that tightens industrial greenhouse gas emission standards. In the perverse case, a unilateral tightening of said standards in C ountry A (a country with relatively stringent industrial emission standards) causes a representative multinational firm to emit more units of greenhouse gas in its global production. The article highlights t…
