  • Exploring the Association of Communication Satisfaction with the Oil and Natural Gas Industry and Risk Perceptions of Shale Energy Development

    Gene L Theodori, Richard Bello et al.•ARTICLE•Society & Natural Resources•2019•Cited by: 1•References: 7

Despite the vast literature on shale energy development, surprisingly little empirical research has been conducted on the shale energy communicators, communication practices, and community outreach programs. Using data drawn from a random sample of individuals in two counties in the Eagle Ford Shale region of south Texas, we present a newly-constructed unidimensional scale that can be used to measure stakeholders’ level of satisfaction with the o…

  • Coping with Break-Ups

    Open Access•Cassie Shimek, Richard Bello•ARTICLE•Social Sciences•2014•References: 8

When serious romantic relationships are terminated, partners are faced with convoluted and complex challenges of detachment from their previous partner, negative feelings about the overall situation, and the need to move forward in life. When faced with this relational upheaval, some individuals employ and find relief in superficial or noncommittal rebound relationships, which act as a means for coping with the loss of the previous relationship a…

  • Attachment Style and Gender as Predictors of Relational Repair Among the Remarried Rationale for the Study

    J Donald Ragsdale, Frances E Brandau‐Brown et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Family Communication•2010•References: 19

This study examined the construct of relational repair among remarried persons with an instrument developed to measure repair strategies used by the remarried. It utilized accommodation theory and its connection to commitment to form hypotheses, which predicted connections between the independent variables of attachment style and gender and the dependent variables of relational repair strategies and types of commitment. Multivariate analysis of v…

  • Attachment Style and Tolerance for Ambiguity Effects on Relational Repair Message Interpretation Among Remarrieds

    Frances E Brandau-Brown, Frances E Brandau‐Brown et al.•ARTICLE•Marriage & Family Review•2010•Cited by: 1

This study examined the role of the dispositional variables of attachment style and tolerance for ambiguity on the interpretation of relational repair messages. Respondents completed questionnaires that measured attachment style and tolerance for ambiguity and made interpretations of hypothetical repair messages from their spouses with varying levels of equivocation. The resulting interpretations were measured along the dimensions of honesty, com…

  • Interpretations of Messages

    Open Access•Richard Bello, Renee Edwards•ARTICLE•Journal of Language and Social…•2005•Cited by: 2•References: 30

Equivocation, the use of ambiguity or vagueness, is used to protect face when an interlocutor seeks to avoid a hurtful truth or a deception. This study compared the effects of self and other-face, sex, and several versions of equivocation on perceptions of messages. Participants (n = 354) read a scenario about a public-speaking situation in which a classmate makes a comment about a poor performance. Equivocation, especially that directed at other…

  • The Annual Carbon Budget for Fen and Forest in a Wetland at Arctic Treeline

Open Access•Wayne R Rouse, Richard Bello et al.•ARTICLE•ARCTIC•2002

Three separate research efforts conducted in the same wetland-peatland system in the northern Hudson Bay Lowland near the town of Churchill, Manitoba, allow a comparison of two carbon budget estimates, one derived from long-term growth rates of organic soil and the other based on shorter-term flux measurements. For a tundra fen and an open subarctic forest, calculations of organic soil accumulation or loss over the last half-century indicate that…

  • Interpretations of Messages

    Open Access•Renee Edwards, Richard Bello•ARTICLE•Human Communication Research•2001

This research examined interpretations of messages as a function of whether they are equivocal or unequivocal, whether they protect self-face or other-face, and whether the perceivers of the messages are directly involved in the conversation or overhear it. The role of self-monitoring and gender were also assessed. Results of Study 1 (N=463) revealed that equivocation is perceived as more polite but less honest and less competent than unequivocal…

  • The contemporary rise of Louisiana Voices and other neo‐Chautauquas

    Richard Bello•ARTICLE•Text and Performance Quarterly•1997•References: 2

This article describes and analyzes the ongoing rise of neo‐Chautauquas, with special focus on one such program in Louisiana. After comparing and contrasting traditional Chautauqua with newer forms, it documents the recent development of Louisiana Voices and argues that the nationwide neo‐Chautauquan phenomenon can be explained by several factors, particularly our society's shift to a condition of secondary orality characterized by saturation wit…

  • The Radiation Balance of Typical Terrain Units in the Low Arctic

Wayne R Rouse, Richard Bello et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of the Association of…•1983•References: 6

This study was designed to achieve an understanding of the behavior of the summer radiation balance for a diversity of terrain types characteristic of the low Arctic near treeline in order to promote more accurate modeling of net radiation from measured or calculated solar radiation or all-wave radiation. Components of the radiation balance, including net radiation, incoming and reflected solar radiation, incoming and outgoing longwave radiation,…
