  • Performance evaluation of an operational dengue forecasting system (D-Moss) in Vietnam

    Open Access•Amy Marie Campbell, Felipe J Colón‐González et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2026

D-MOSS (Dengue forecasting Model Satellite-based System) was launched operationally in Vietnam in June 2019, providing near-real time dengue forecasts across all 63 provinces. Very few dengue forecasting systems have prospectively evaluated the performance of dengue forecasting under real-world operational conditions. This study comprehensively assesses D-MOSS dengue forecasting performance since operationalisation through both statistical accura…

  • Linking Science and Technology with Arts and the Next Generation: The STEAM Imaging Experimental Artist Residency, A Case Study

    Barbara Hofmann•ARTICLE•Leonardo•2021

The author describes designing an artist-in-residence project within a research institute for applied science as a dialogue-oriented form of science communication and education. The author collaborated with a scientist, an artist, a software architect and a sound designer to realize the STEAM Imaging pilot project as a conceptual framework for fostering collaborative engagement among school students, scientists and an artist. • Evaluating Vacancy Referrals and the Roles of Sanctions and Sickness Absence

Open Access•Gerard J Van Den Berg, Barbara Hofmann et al.•ARTICLE•The Economic Journal•2019•References: 1

Job vacancy referrals are a common active labor market policy measure. Unemployment insurance agencies may combat moral hazard by punishing refusals to apply to assigned vacancies. During sickness spells, minimum requirements on search behaviour do not apply. This may reduce the threat effect of sanctions. We study effects of vacancy referrals and sanctions on unemployment durations and job match quality. We find that a vacancy referral increases…

  • Job Displacement and First Birth Over the Business Cycle

Open Access•Barbara Hofmann, Michaela Kreyenfeld et al.•ARTICLE•Demography•2017•Cited by: 18•References: 47

In this article, we investigate the impact of job displacement on women’s first-birth rates as well as the variation in this effect over the business cycle. We use mass layoffs to estimate the causal effects of involuntary job loss on fertility in the short and medium term, up to five years after displacement. Our analysis is based on rich administrative data from Germany, with an observation period spanning more than 20 years. We apply inverse p…

  • Do Geographical Mobility Requirements for the Unemployed Affect their Exit Rate to Work? Evidence from a Policy Change

    Open Access•Barbara Hofmann•ARTICLE•Industrial and Labor Relations…•2015•References: 22

A policy change tightened job search requirements regarding geographical mobility for unemployment insurance-benefit recipients in Germany. Those affected by the policy change were individuals without family ties and whose reemployment prospects were low in their home labor market region. The author finds that after one year the policy change led to a 4.6 percentage point increase in employment among women without children who lived in regions wi…

  • Beratung und Vermittlung von Arbeitslosen: Ein Literaturüberblick zu Ausgestaltung und Wirkung

Barbara Hofmann, Peter Kupka et al.•ARTICLE•Sozialer Fortschritt•2014•Cited by: 1•References: 10

  • Perceived Economic Uncertainty and Fertility: Evidence From a Labor Market Reform

Open Access•Barbara Hofmann, Katrin Hohmeyer•ARTICLE•Journal of Marriage and the Family•2013•Cited by: 38•References: 29

Whereas in theory individuals tend to postpone fertility decisions in times of economic uncertainty, empirical evidence on that question is scarce. Using data from the German Socio-Economic Panel (N = 4,548), the authors estimated the effect of economic concerns on the probability of becoming pregnant in the next year. They exploited exogenous variation in economic concerns induced by the announcement of a major German unemployment benefit reform…

  • Ethogram of selected behaviors initiated by free-ranging short-finned pilot whales (Globicephala macrorhynchus) and directed to human swimmers during open water encounters

Michael Scheer, Barbara Hofmann et al.•ARTICLE•Anthrozoös•2004•References: 14

In order to establish an ethogram of interactive behaviors initiated by free-ranging short-finned pilot whales (Globicephala macrorhynchus) and directed to human swimmers, we initiated encounters with non-habituated pilot whale groups during open water encounters southwest of Tenerife, Canary Islands, over two field seasons (1996 and 2001). Human swimmers followed a precautionary set of rules during approaches. Encounters ranged in duration from …
