  • Minerva: The Intentional University

Open Access•Teri A Cannon, Teri Cannon et al.•ARTICLE•Daedalus•2024•Cited by: 2

Minerva University is a pioneering educational institution established in 2012 with the goal of redefining liberal arts education for the twenty-first century. Addressing widespread concerns about the effectiveness of traditional higher education, Minerva adopts first principles thinking in its pedagogy, emphasizing practical knowledge, active learning, and global exposure. The curriculum is constructed around two distinct types of learning objec…

  • Mental Imagery: Functional Mechanisms and Clinical Applications

Open Access•Joel Pearson, Thomas Naselaris et al.•ARTICLE•Trends in Cognitive Sciences•2015

Mental imagery research has weathered both disbelief of the phenomenon and inherent methodological limitations. Here we review recent behavioral, brain imaging, and clinical research that has reshaped our understanding of mental imagery. Research supports the claim that visual mental imagery is a depictive internal representation that functions like a weak form of perception. Brain imaging work has demonstrated that neural representations of ment…

  • Imagining predictions: Mental imagery as mental emulation

    Open Access•Samuel T Moulton, Stephen M Kosslyn•ARTICLE•Philosophical Transactions of the…•2009

We argue that the primary function of mental imagery is to allow us to generate specific predictions based upon past experience. All imagery allows us to answer ‘what if’ questions by making explicit and accessible the likely consequences of being in a specific situation or performing a specific action. Imagery is also characterized by its reliance on perceptual representations and activation of perceptual brain systems. We use this conception of…

  • Crime Alert: How Thinking About a Single Suspect Automatically Shifts Stereotypes Toward an Entire Group

Open Access•Scott A Akali, Scott Akali et al.•ARTICLE•Du Bois Review Social Science…•2008•Cited by: 2•References: 30

Crime alerts are meant to raise community awareness and identify individual criminal suspects; they are not expected to affect attitudes and beliefs toward the social group to which an individual suspect belongs. However, psychological principles of learning, categorization, and memory predict that what is learned about an instance can color perception of an entire category. At the intersection of psychology, criminal justice, sociology, and medi…

  • When is early visual cortex activated during visual mental imagery

    Stephen M Kosslyn, William L Thompson•ARTICLE•Psychological Bulletin•2003•Cited by: 9•References: 96

Although many neuroimaging studies of visual mental imagery have revealed activation in early visual cortex (Areas 17 or 18), many others have not. The authors review this literature and compare how well 3 models explain the disparate results. Each study was coded 1 or 0, indicating whether activation in early visual cortex was observed, and sets of variables associated with each model were fit to the observed results using logistic regression an…

  • Bridging psychology and biology: The analysis of individuals in groups

    Stephen M Kosslyn, John T Cacioppo et al.•ARTICLE•American Psychologist•2002

Biological systems are particularly prone to variation, and the authors argue that such variation must be regarded as important data in its own right. The authors describe a method in which individual differences are studied within the framework of a general theory of the population as a whole and illustrate how this method can be used to address three types of issues: the nature of the mechanisms that give rise to a specific ability, such as men…

    Stephen M Kosslyn•BOOK•Image And Brain•1994

This long-awaited work by prominent Harvard psychologist Stephen Kosslyn integrates a twenty-year research program on the nature of high-level vision and mental imagery. Image and Brain marshals insights and empirical results from computer vision, neuroscience, and cognitive science to develop a general theory of visual mental imagery, its relation to visual perception, and its implementation in the human brain. It offers a definitive resolution …
