  • The democratic ethics of artificially intelligent polling

    Open Access•Roberto Cerina, Élise Rouméas•ARTICLE•AI & Society•2025

This paper examines the democratic ethics of artificially intelligent polls. Driven by machine learning, AI electoral polls have the potential to generate predictions with an unprecedented level of granularity. We argue that their predictive power is potentially desirable for electoral democracy. We do so by critically engaging with four objections: (1) the privacy objection, which focuses on the potential harm of the collection, storage, and pub…

  • Nurturing Virtues with Digital Democratic Innovations

    Open Access•Anna Mikhaylovskaya, Élise Rouméas•ARTICLE•Philosophy & Technology•2025

Digital democratic innovations (DDIs) have been widely discussed as a promising way of engaging citizens in political decision-making. Extensive research has focused on designing DDIs that are deliberative, inclusive, and representative. However, little attention has been paid to DDIs’ potential for nurturing individual democratic virtues. Our paper aims to address this gap. We argue that the cultivation of democratic virtues should play a more c…

  • The political ethics of strategic voting: A Compromissory Account

    Open Access•Andrei Poama, Élise Rouméas•ARTICLE•Critical Review of International…•2025•References: 10

This paper argues that strategic voting is an act of internal compromise which tracks two conditions: a success condition – choosing a candidate who stands a realistic chance of winning – and a sacrifice condition – forgoing something of value in the process. This compromissory account has implications for the political ethics of voting: it guides voters toward compromising less, or more effectively. First, we examine how the concept of internal …

  • The right to a fair exit

    Open Access•Élise Rouméas•ARTICLE•Politics Philosophy & Economics•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 5

This paper introduces a novel account of freedom of dissociation, construed as the “right to a fair exit.” It defines freedom of dissociation as the right to end an association without excessive and undue costs. This novel account contrasts with the classic right of exit that some liberal philosophers have theorized as the bedrock of associational freedom. The original right of exit is first and foremost concerned with the protection against exce…

  • The Procedural Value of Compromise

    Élise Rouméas•ARTICLE•Social Theory and Practice•2021

Compromise is a valuable decision-making procedure. This article argues that its value lies in the norms of reciprocity and consent. Reciprocity structures the practice of concession-giving. Compliance with this tacit rule expresses an ethos of mutual concern and achieves a shared sense of fairness. Consent is a useful safeguard against asymmetric deals and makes compromise morally binding. The procedural value of compromise gives us important re…

  • Enabling Exit: Religious Association and Membership Contract

    Open Access•Élise Rouméas•ARTICLE•Ethical Theory and Moral Practice•2020

This paper investigates the right of exit from religious associations. The liberal state has a compelling interest in overseeing exit, even if it implies some loss in religious group autonomy. Members should not be bound by rules they find unconscionable. They should be free to leave and able to do so. To enable exit, the paper advocates the use of membership contracts. Religious associations should issue a contract for members working for, resid…

  • Religious Diversity in the Workplace: The Case for Alternative Dispute Resolution

    Open Access•Élise Rouméas•ARTICLE•Political Studies•2020•Cited by: 2•References: 15

The workplace is a focal point for debates about religion and public life. This article examines the question of religion at work, and how to fairly resolve the conflicts it generates. Specifically, it advocates for the use of alternative dispute resolution to address these conflicts. Alternative dispute resolution refers to a set of dispute processing methods, mainly arbitration and mediation. Unlike litigation, these procedures rely on the cons…

  • Conscientious Objection to Military Service and Laborde’s Exemption Test

    Élise Rouméas•ARTICLE•Secular Studies•2019

This paper applies Laborde’s theory of the justice of exemptions to what has become a relatively uncontroversial case, the exemption to military service. It assesses how the exemption test designed by Laborde can guide decision-making relative to a specific historical case, focusing on the French example. The exercise sheds light on how contextual considerations—the legal status quo, the geopolitical context, the number of objectors—decisively in…
