  • Migrants, farmers and farmworkers and the politics of land and labour

    Open Access•Saturnino M Borras Jr, Saturnino M Borra et al.•ARTICLE•Agriculture and Human Values•2025•References: 50

In this article, framing and introducing the Special Issue on ‘Migrants, Farmers and Farmworkers’, we argue that the interaction between structural, institutional and political dynamics shapes the character and trajectory of social relations among migrants, farmers and farmworkers, which in turn influence or could influence the character and trajectory of broader struggles within and against capitalism, and the building of systemic alternatives. …

  • Local food-global labour

    Open Access•Martha Jane Robbins•ARTICLE•Agriculture and Human Values•2025•Cited by: 1•References: 14

The logic of the corporate food regime requires a system of labour based on migration. Free trade agreements have entrenched a drive for ever-expanding export agriculture and resulted in both a devastation of peasant agriculture, creating migrant workers, and an increased need for temporary labour on Canadian farms. Family farmers in Canada face labour challenges exacerbated by the current food regime and, for some, the Seasonal Agricultural Work…

  • Exploring the ‘localisation’ dimension of food sovereignty

    Martha Jane Robbins•ARTICLE•Third World Quarterly•2015•Cited by: 15•References: 42

The ‘localisation’ narrative is at the heart of food sovereignty in theory and practice, in reaction to the ‘distance’ dimension in the dominant industrial food system. But while it is a central element in food sovereignty, it is under-theorised and largely unproblematised. Using the theoretical concepts of food regime analysis, uneven geographical development and metabolic rift, the author presents an exploratory discussion on the localisation d…

  • Food sovereignty

    Alberto Alonso‐fradeja, Alberto Alonso-Fradejas et al.•ARTICLE•Third World Quarterly•2015•Cited by: 33•References: 23

This article introduces this special collection on food sovereignty. It frames the collection in relation to a broader political and intellectual initiative that aims to deepen academic discussions on food sovereignty. Building upon previous and parallel initiatives in ‘engaged academic research’ and following the tradition of ‘critical dialogue’ among activists and academics, we have identified four key themes – all focusing on the contradiction…
