  • Statistical Theories of Mental Test Scores

    Frederic M Lord, Melvin R Novick•BOOK•Statistical Theories of Mental…•2008

  • Standards for Educational and Psychological Testing

    Open Access•Lamonte G Wyche, Melvin R Novick•ARTICLE•Journal of Black Psychology•1985•Cited by: 2•References: 5

This article examines the various ways in which the problem of testing bias in the context of some contemporary educa tional, legal, and societal developments can and cannot be addressed by developments in test standards. It reiterates the contention that school psychologists should utilize differ ential assessment strategies in formulating decisions regard ing school age Black children

  • Educational Testing

    Open Access•Melvin R Novick•ARTICLE•Educational Researcher•1982•Cited by: 1•References: 30

essarily probabilistic in character. The essence of the scientific game is to make the description precise. The concept of population has received much attention in statistical literature in the works of Fisher (1956), Meehl and Rosen (1955), De Finetti (1974), and Lindley and Novick (1981). In this paper I attempt to show that the idea of relevant population is useful in considering a wide variety of otherwise unrelated problems in educational r…

  • Further Cross-Validation Analysis of the Bayesian m -Group Regression Method

    Open Access•Melvin R Novick, Paul H Jackson•ARTICLE•American Educational Research…•1974•Cited by: 1•References: 8

Novick, Jackson, Thayer, and Cole (1972) conducted a cross-validation study of the Bayesian m-group regression method developed by Jackson, Novick, and Thayer (1971) based on a theory described in Lindley and Smith (1972). The context of this cross validation was the use of ACT Assessment Scores to predict first semester grade point averages in traditional junior colleges. Within-group least squares regression lines were calculated in each of 22 …

  • Moderator Subgroups and Bayesian m -Group Regression

    Open Access•Melvin R Novick•ARTICLE•American Educational Research…•1974•References: 2

Several points should be made regarding the Schoenfeldt-Lissitz paper (1974). 1) Schoenfeldt and Lissitz have taken our general comment (Novick & Jackson, 1974) that moderator variable methods are typically unsuccessful when subgrouping follows from a blind fishing expedition or data dredging [p. 79] as applying to their study. They then clearly demonstrate that their subgroupings had a solid theoretical basis. The fact that these subgroupings di…

  • Coefficient Alpha and the Reliability of Composite Measurements

    Open Access•Melvin R Novick, Charles Lewis•ARTICLE•Psychometrika•1967

Following a general approach due to Guttman, coefficient α is rederived as a lower bound on the reliability of a test. A necessary and sufficient condition under which equality is attained in this inequality and hence that α is equal to the reliability of the test is derived and shown to be closely related to the recent redefinition of the concept of parallel measurements due to Novick. This condition is then also shown to be closely related to t…

  • A Predictor-Variable Selection Program

    Open Access•Dorothy T Thayer, Melvin R Novick•ARTICLE•Educational and Psychological…•1967

This package contains programs to perform the following standard types of regression analyses: (a) full regression, (b) forward selection, and (c) backward elimination. The special feature of the package is a program for determining the optimum relative test lengths so as to maximize the multiple correlation for a fixed total testing time using the algorithm developed by Woodbury and Novick (1967)
