A model for assessing communication course effectiveness during crisis: Covid-19 impacts on vulnerable student populations
This study examined the performance and perceptions of students belonging to one or more vulnerable groups (based on gender, ethnicity, international status, and first-generation status) taking an introductory communication course in an online setting during the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic. The purpose was to assess whether there were any differences in academic performance, growth in self-perceived communication competencies (public speaki…
The importance, significance, and relevance of communication: A fourth study of the criticality of the discipline’s content and pedagogy
The results of this study argue that communication, and specifically oral communication education, is critical to students’ future personal and professional success. Similar to three earlier studies, thematic analysis of 2,155 articles, identified in academic and popular press publications extending from 2016 to 2020, provides support for the centrality of the communication discipline’s content and pedagogy. These results reinforce the importance…

The Prevalence and Rationale for Presenting an Opposing Viewpoint in Climate Change Reporting: Findings from a U.S. National Survey of TV Weathercasters
The journalistic norm of balance has been described as the practice of giving equal weight to different sides of a story; false balance is balanced reporting when the weight of evidence strongly favors one side over others—for example, the reality of human-caused climate change. False balance is problematic because it skews public perception of expert agreement. Through formative interviews and a survey of American weathercasters about climate ch…

Course administrators hold a unique position in academe-one that requires high levels of emotion management as part of the job. This research utilized a collaborative autoethnography to explore how workplace emotions were experienced in the basic communication course. The experiences were presented through vignettes written and analyzed by seven course administrators from programs across the United States. Four themes emerged from the vignettes: …
Modeling everyday talk: Differences across communication media and sex composition of friendship dyads
This manuscript advances a mesolevel approach to everyday talk. Given frequent use of mediated communication within interpersonal relationships, we use a technique akin to multitrait/multimethod decomposition to separate content- and medium-specific variance sources. The results find that cross-sex friends enact everyday talk behaviors less frequently than do same-sex friends when communicating face-to-face and via telephone, but these difference…
Faculty and Student Classroom Influences on Academic Dishonesty
This study examined the influence that faculty and students have on academic dishonesty. Results showed that instructors who employ more safeguards against academic dishonesty and who discuss plagiarism, collaboration, and source attribution are more likely to observe students engaging in academic dishonesty behaviors. This study also found that students are less likely to report engaging in serious plagiarism if the instructor spends time discus…
