Road not taken? Inventing, modernizing, and renegotiating the concept of association in 19 th -century Socialism
This paper investigates the intellectual lineage of the concept of association in 19th century European socialism. We trace the crucial debates and subsequent rearticulations of the concept, beginning with Charles Fourier’s reflections and further innovations spawned by his followers, finally discussing Edward Abramowski’s attempts to adjust this concept to the Polish context and create a full blown ideology by using it. Our study reveals certain…
New Poland in the New World: Utopian Settlement Project on the Polish Way, 1843–1853
This paper discusses the project of creating a Polish colony in the United States, propagated by Józef Alfons Potrykowski and a group of his followers. In 1843–1853, seeing no possibility of preserving Polishness in Europe, they strove to establish a New Poland ( Nowa Polska ) in North America or Australia. Initially it was to be a single colony, but Potrykowski’s blueprint projected its development and the creation of an entire Polish province t…
Communicating Utopia: Facets of the Concept of Social Palace in 19th-Century France
The article offers insights into the intricate interplay between materiality and the semiotics, exploring the Fourierist visions of the social palace in 19th-century France. The concept, having roots at the epoch, is used comprehensively as an analytical category. As such, it merges a plethora of architectural ideas exposed by early socialists. The first section traces the concept’s genealogy, situating it within its broader historical and contex…

Discussing Pauperism in mid-Nineteenth Century Poland and Russia: A Study of Conceptual Transfers to the Imperial Heartland and Peripheries
This article investigates the transfer of the concept of pauperism to the Russian Empire in the 1840s, exploring the published output of authors from the Kingdom of Poland and St Petersburg. Henryk Kamieński and Vladimir A. Milyutin published articles – in 1845 and 1847 respectively – for the first time in their native languages discussing the phenomenon of pauperism in Western Europe. Their reflections are parallel in many respects, especially c…

This article is an introduction to a special issue on ‘Wandering Ideas: Circulations of Radical Social Thought in the long 19th century’, which contributes to the ongoing debates on the revolutionary and socialist ideas on the move before the First World War. Collected papers touch upon, chiefly, such countries as Argentina, Bulgaria, France, Germany, Poland, Ukraine, as well as the Russian and Ottoman Empires. Contributions in their previous for…

Who May Represent a Nation in Upheaval? The Concept of Representation during the Polish November Uprising, 1830–1831
This article investigates the changing ideas of representation during one of the European upheavals of the 1830s, the Polish November Uprising. Studying the Polish Sejm proceedings, we ask about the impact of the uprising and warfare on revamping the concept of representation. A representative, parliamentary, but not yet democratic order emerged under the conditions of reduced sovereignty. We demonstrate how pragmatic considerations in times of w…
Between Science and Utopia: Physical and Astronomical Notions within French and Polish Fourierism
This article investigates the role of physical and astronomical notions in the formation process of transnational political ideologies. It does so by focusing on the striking example of nineteenth-century early socialist movements, particularly Fourierism. Indeed, Fourier’s bold cosmogony enabled him to connect many fields of knowledge, and soon became a powerful vehicle for his ideas on the international scale. The article likewise analyses the …
Planning an Uprising; Remaking a Nation: The Polish Radicals’ Debates on the Army and War in 1832-1846 Revisited
The primary aim of this article is to investigate the debates among those radicals who found themselves in exile after the failure of the Polish November Uprising (1830–1831) about whether a new national war was necessary. Instead of dealing with their reflections on warfare, I focus on the political dimension of these debates, and in particular on their ideas about mobilization during wartime. The first part of the article sketches out the gener…
Subversive Concepts: Empires and Beyond
“The worst thing one can do with words,” George Orwell once wrote, “is to surrender to them.” One must “let the meaning choose the word, and not the other way,” to use language for “expressing and not forconcealing or preventing thought,” he continued (1953, 169). For centuries, social movements “let the meaning to choose the words” and actively sought new categories to grasp the world. They also expressedthe desire for a new world but often surr…
From rejection to historicisation: The reception of Robert Owen’s ideas in the nineteenth-century Polish context
The main aim of this article is to investigate the reception of Owen’s ideas in the nineteenth-century Polish context. I argue that Owen’s ideas did not attract as much attention as those of, amongst others, Charles Fourier, Félicité de Lamennais, or – in the second half of the century – Karl Marx. Despite being overshadowed by other Romantic socialists, Owen’s reception in Poland can be described as having been marked by three phases. Though we …
Mechanisms of Conceptual Change in the Discourse of Polish Political Emigration after the November Insurrection of 1830–1
This essay investigates the mechanisms of conceptual change in the discourse of Polish political emigration after the November Insurrection of 1830–1. To this end, a methodological apparatus is employed that has been elaborated by scholars of the German ‘history of concepts’ (Begriffsgeschichte) school and by Anglo-Saxon researchers specialised in the intellectual history and studies on ideology. Quoting a series of period source materials, I arg…
Travelling counter-concepts in revolutionary Europe: Individualism-socialism from Pierre Leroux to Polish ‘democratism
This article analyses the ways in which travelling counter-concepts forged under specific intellectual conditions can penetrate a new, absorbing national context and contribute to the emergence of an original and coherent ideology. We focus on the juxtaposed pair individualism-socialism, coined in France in the 1830s by Pierre Leroux as an attempt to respond to the social and political tensions in his country at that time and to promote democrati…
Remarks on Communes of the Polish People: The character of organization, the ideology, the meaning
The aim of this paper is to rethink three important issues that refer to Communes of the Polish People’s history. Firstly, it proposes a new understanding of organization frames, in which this group acted, using the Eric Hobsbawm’s term labour sects. Secondly, the intention is to undermine the understanding of the ideological development of this organization through the prism of theoretical activity of Stanisław Worcell and Zenon Świętosławski. I…

On the basis of the texts from the era the understanding of socialism, the principles of the program of Clusters of the Polish People and the anatomy of Fr. Piotr Ściegienny’s conspiracy have been reconstructed. The text reproduces the utopian ideas of social reconstr…
From "De Facto King" to Peasants' Communes
This article presents a conceptual history of representation in the political debates of the Polish émigré community in the period 1832-1846/48. As I argue, while the concept was present in the output of all political environments of the Polish Great Emigration, there were more discrepancies than similarities about how to understand it. As a result of debates about what the Polish diaspora in exile actually was and who had the right to represent …

This article addresses the question of the utopian impulse in Ludwik Królikowski’s work and thought, with particular reference to its transnational dimension. By providing a holistic view of his entire life and sketching his biographical background, this study reveals Królikowski’s principal inspirations and the reasons for his changes of mind, and in so doing, presents him against the background of various intersecting currents of thought. With …

This article tackles the conceptualisation of the working class amongst the Polish left from the period of the establishment of the Polish Democratic Society (1832) until the convention in Paris, which resulted in the creation of the Polish Socialist Party (1892). The first part of the article concerns the period between 1832-1846. It analyses the first uses of concepts such as “proletarjat” in the Polish political language. It presents a reflect…

Retoryka i utopia. Ludwik Królikowski: Studium struktury myśli
An article concerns on the structure of Ludwik Królikowski’s thought. In the first part, I recapitulate the current state of research and I point that many authors had troubles with the categorization of Królikowski. In second part I claim that religious metaphors in his thought were to serve its political effectiveness, but eventually these means of expression have become not just only rhetoric, but absolute metaphors. In sequence, I scrutinize …
Uljanow – człowiek bezdomny. Uwagi o książce Helen Rappaport
Helen Rappaport in her book Conspirator: Lenin in exile proposes a new view of Lenin’s lifetime in exile, i.e., of the period 1902–1917, as the most important time in the Russian revolutionist’s life. This approach opens up a place for new interpretations, but also is combined with certain problems. To some extent, Rappaport succeeds in demythologizing Lenin and in showing him as a character whose features and outlook are in the process of being …
