The article offers insights into the intricate interplay between materiality and the semiotics, exploring the Fourierist visions of the social palace in 19th-century France. The concept, having roots at the epoch, is used comprehensively as an analytical category. As such, it merges a plethora of architectural ideas exposed by early socialists. The first section traces the concept’s genealogy, situating it within its broader historical and contextual framework. The second section delves into the diverse manifestations of the social palace, examining its portrayal through illustrations, articles and brochures. The third section analyzes the ideological transformation of the concept as it gained additional meanings and dimensions, solidifying its status as a comprehensive ideology. The fourth section focusses on the spatial development of the social palace, in particular its integration into the industrial landscape. In conclusion, the article highlights the concept’s temporal and spatial expansion, emphasizing the methodological insights contained in this case study. By offering a nuanced examination of the concept of social palace, this article enriches our understanding of utopian thought in 19th-century France and its broader implications
