  • College Students’ Political Attitudes Affect Negative Stereotypes about Social Groups

    Open Access•Stephan Beyer•ARTICLE•Social Sciences•2022•References: 6

This study examined the relations between political attitudes and negative stereotypes in undergraduates by employing 4 measures of stereotypes: modern sexism, modern racism, feelings about 20 social groups, and ratings of the intelligence of these social groups. It was hypothesized that conservatives and Republicans alike would show more evidence of negative stereotypes than liberals and Democrats, especially for disadvantaged social groups. The…

  • Why are women underrepresented in Computer Science? Gender differences in stereotypes, self-efficacy, values, and interests and predictors of future CS course-taking and grades

Stephan Beyer, Sylvia Beyer•ARTICLE•Computer Science Education•2014

This study addresses why women are underrepresented in Computer Science (CS). Data from 1319 American first-year college students (872 female and 447 male) indicate that gender differences in computer self-efficacy, stereotypes, interests, values, interpersonal orientation, and personality exist. If students had had a positive experience in their first CS course, they had a stronger intention to take another CS course. A subset of 128 students (6…

  • Deterrents to women taking computer science courses

Open Access•Stephan Beyer, Kristina N Rynes et al.•ARTICLE•IEEE Technology and Society…•2004

The United States faces a shortage of computer scientists. Despite the current economic downturn, the most recent estimate indicates a labor force shortage of IT professionals. The shortage of IT professionals, and especially of computer scientists, provides impetus for increasing the representation of women in computer science (CS). We examine why so few students, and particularly few women, choose to enter the beginning phase of the CS pipeline…

  • Gender Differences in Seff-Perceptions: Convergent Evidence from Three Measures of Accuracy and Bias

Open Access•Stephan Beyer, Sylvia Beyer et al.•ARTICLE•Personality and Social Psychology…•1997

This research assessed gender differences in the accuracy of self-perceptions. Do males and females with equal ability have similar self-perceptions of their ability? Three measures of accuracy were used: accuracy of self-evaluations, calibration for individual questions, and response bias. As hypothesized, for a masculine task, significant gender differences were found for all three measures: Females' self-evaluations of performance were inaccur…

  • Gender differences in the accuracy of self-evaluations of performance

Stephan Beyer, Sylvia Beyer•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality and Social…•1990•Cited by: 20

Research has shown that gender differences in self-perceptions exist. However, interpretational ambiguities make it impossible to determine whether these gender differences are due to the operation of biases. The present research investigated whether gender differences in biased selfperceptions exist by assessing the accuracy of posttask self-evaluations of performance. In accordance with self-consistency theory, it was hypothesized that Ss' expe…

  • The Cult of Tārā: Magic and Ritual in Tibet

Stephan Beyer, Stephen Beyer•BOOK•Cult of Tara•1978•Cited by: 6

The real history of man is the history of religion." The truth of the famous dictum of Max Muller, the father of the History of Religions, is nowhere so obvious as in Tibet. Western students have observed that religion and magic pervade not only the forms of Tibetan art, politics, and society, but also every detail of ordinary human existence. And what is the all-pervading religion of Tibet? The Buddhism of that country has been described to us, …
