    Open Access•Robert Schaefer, Robert Schafer•ARTICLE•Soziale Welt•2025

  • A New Spirit of Capitalism? Quantitative Analysis of Swiss-German Print Job Advertisements (1955–2005) and Their Time Diagnostic Relevance

Open Access•Julia Bannwart, Anna Laura Ludwig et al.•ARTICLE•Swiss Journal of Sociology•2021

Boltanski and Chiapello put forward the thesis that the spirit of capitalism has fundamentally changed in the course of the 20th century. According to them, diligence, discipline and orderliness are no longer at the core of the new spirit, but values such as passion, authenticity or creativity. Following this line of thought, this contribution analyzes whether the qualifications required in Swiss-German job advertisements suggest the existence of…

  • Die Proteste gegen die Corona-Maßnahmen: Eine soziologische Annäherung

Nadine Frei, Nadine Klopfenstein Frei et al.•ARTICLE•Forschungsjournal Soziale…•2021

    Open Access•Robert Schaefer, Nadine Klopfenstein Frei•ARTICLE•Zeitschrift für Religion…•2021•Cited by: 4•References: 6

The article presents the results of the interpretation of qualitative interviews with coronavirus critics. It focuses on the forms of social criticism manifested in the interviews. The analysis (1) shows that the critique is based on a rationalistic ideal of crisis resolution. The fact that the coronavirus crisis, from this point of view, is not dealt with rationally is seen as an indication that there is something fundamentally wrong with it. It…

  • Secular justifications of the world. A neo-Weberian typology of cosmodicies

    Open Access•Robert Schaefer•ARTICLE•Social Compass•2021•Cited by: 2•References: 42

This article asks how secular societies cope with suffering and fortune perceived as unjust and undeserved. It investigates secular forms of dealing with the originally religious problem of theodicy. According to Weber's work, Western societies have solved this problem with the meritocratic ideal based on the Calvinist doctrine of predestination, which gave rise to the capitalistic work ethics. Current sociological diagnoses observe a crisis of t…
