Banquetes coloniales.
Remembering the Tatas: Domestic Women and Slavery in Tetouan (19th - 20th centuries)

The Jewish Djinn in Northern Morocco. Old and New Neighborhoods
In northern Morocco, Jewish djinn appear in various Muslim accounts of possessions and cures of afflictions, which present them as more dangerous and impure than other djinn or project onto them characteristics that resemble the stereotypes that Muslims have of Jews. Despite their marginality, these stories are the reflection of an old neighborhood between Muslims and Jews in Morocco, which was altered by the departure of the latter after the cre…
In Praise of Historical Anthropology: Perspectives, Methods, and Applications to the Study of Power and Colonialism
In Praise of Historical Anthropology is based on a fundamental conviction: the study of society cannot be undertaken without considering the weight of history and separations between disciplines in academics need to be bridged for the benefit of knowledge. Anthropology cannot be limited to situating its object in its immediate context; rather its true subject of study is society as a historical problem. The book describes the complex attempts to …
Slave Women and Their Descendants among the Upper Classes in Tetouan, Morocco (1859–1956): Between Recognition and Conflict
In the Arab world, the recognized children of elite men and slave women could adopt the status of their father, ignoring the slave origin of the mother, owing to a system of patrilineal transmission. This regime co-existed with negative stereotypes toward slaves and blackness, despite the very fact that—as this study of notable families in Tetouan between 1859 and 1956 demonstrates—skin color was not the determinant factor to form part of this gr…

Remembering the tatas: An oral history of the Tetouan elite about their female domestic slaves
Affluent families in Tetouan (Morocco) had female domestic servants from slave origins until well into the twentieth century. I present here a reconstruction of the trajectories and living conditions of those women, based on the recent memory of the slave-owning families themselves. This exercise raises different methodological challenges about the use of memory, while allowing us to present the transformations that the slavery system underwent i…
The coronavirus in the Moroccan religious field: The invocations to Allah on the night of 21 March in northern Morocco

Spirits are like microbes”: Islamic revival and the definition of morality in Moroccan exorcism
Representing Modernity: The Nationalist Theatre in Colonial Northern Morocco
Modernity cannot be just considered as a unidirectional process imposed from ‘the West’. Rather, it is the outcome of an interaction with ‘the West’ in which different parts of the world like the Maghreb built their own versions of social change. During the colonial period theatre became one of the genres and spaces in which these political and cultural interactions can be clearly observed. In the Spanish Protectorate in Morocco, the young Morocc…
Are there ‘ Mestizos ’ in the Arab World? A Comparative Survey of Classification Categories and Kinship Systems
Terminology devoted to miscegenation and inter-ethnic relationships is extremely problematic, and this article shows that many of these categories are more classificatory than descriptive. Some North African and Middle Eastern examples reveal that theoretical concepts about mixture reflect the folk conceptions of the observers rather that the meaning of local categories which not necessarily share those notions of mixture. In this sense, it is su…

«Pourquoi tu ne M'écris Plus . .
