  • Tertius Dolens: The Student Experience of the University of Manitoba Faculty Association Strike

    Open Access•Daniel Albas, Cheryl Albas•ARTICLE•Canadian Review of Sociology/Revue…•2000•References: 10

  • Disclaimer mannerisms of students: How to avoid being labelled as cheaters

    Open Access•Daniel Albas, Cheryl Albas•ARTICLE•Canadian Review of Sociology/Revue…•1993•Cited by: 3•References: 7

  • Anxiety and Affiliation (Or Isolation?): A Note on Teichman's Study

Open Access•Cheryl Albas, Cheryl Mills Albas•ARTICLE•Social Behavior and Personality…•1990

Teichman (1987) designed and executed an experiment in which she tested the hypothesis that specific ego threats under conditions of high trait anxiety will produce isolation. Her subjects were groups of students who had either already been accepted into or were competing for entrance to graduate school. On the basis of the results she concluded that anxiety (resulting from a specific ego threat) leads to negative affiliation. A longitudinal part…

  • Modern Magic: The Case of Examinations

    Open Access•Daniel Albas, Cheryl Albas•ARTICLE•Sociological Quarterly•1989•Cited by: 5•References: 3

The suggestion that students at present day universities participate in magic at exam time may seem unusual. This study views “magic” as behavior directed toward achieving an outcome, involving many everyday and commonplace acts, but seeming to rely for success on some mystical element. Hundreds of personal accounts from students describing their exam-related behaviors provide the basis for a classification system of their “magical practices.” Th…

  • Aces and Bombers: The Post-Exam Impression Management Strategies of Students

    Open Access•Daniel Albas, Cheryl Albas•ARTICLE•Symbolic Interaction•1988•Cited by: 6•References: 5

In this study we attempted to develop a classification of the strategies students employ to manage self-impressions after grades have been awarded and examination papers returned. These encounters between students are of three types: first, when students who have scored a top grade in this exam (Aces) encounter other students who received a low or even failing grade (Bombers); second, when Aces encounter other Aces; and, third, when Bombers encou…
