Macro-Economic Inequality and National Stereotypes in 45 Non-Western Countries
The assumption that people favor ingroups and disfavor outgroups is based largely on theory and research from Western countries. However, groups subjected to economic exploitation and inequality might come to favor more advantaged outgroups. The present large-scale study ( N = 12,339) involving 45 non-Western countries explored ingroup stereotypes and stereotypes of relatively advantaged and disadvantaged outgroups (Western Europeans and Western …
Horror and Solidarity: Collective Health During the Covid-19 Emergency in Guayaquil, Ecuador
In 2020, Ecuador was among the most affected places in the world in the context of the COVID-19 emergency. Serious problems of structural inequality and governance resulted in corpses lying in the streets of Guayaquil-Ecuador's largest city-while local communities resisted in different ways. We interviewed 18 participants who engaged in actions of solidarity during this context, critically analyzed their discourses, and generated relevant themes.…
Whose norms and whose peace? A critical analysis of counterprotests against an indigenous-led mobilization in Ecuador
The ethical–political dimension of social and community praxis: The case of Ecuador's early response to Covid‐19
Around the globe, millions of people have experienced suffering and death related to COVID-19, an infectious disease caused by the SARS-CoV2 virus. In Ecuador, the painful impact of the pandemic elicited early responses by the government and by local communities. This critical, positioned and exploratory case study analyses such responses, underscoring the fundamental ethical-political dimension of any academic and professional praxis aimed at the…
History, violence and collective memory: Implications for mental health in Ecuador
National histories of violence shape experiences of suffering and the ways that mental health professionals respond to them. In Ecuador, mental health literature addressing this crucial issue is scarce and little debated. In contrast, local psychiatrists and psychologists within the country face contemporary challenges that are deeply rooted in a violent colonial past and the perpetuation of its fundamental ethos. This paper critically reviews re…
