  • When dad and mom are away from home…; "Panji Paniba" 11.20-45

Open Access•Willem Van Der Molen•ARTICLE•Wacana Journal of the Humanities…•2021

Access to the pre-modern world of Classical Javanese literature (seventeenth-nineteenth centuries) starts with a sound knowledge of its idiom. “When dad and mom are away from home...” leads the novice through grammatical constructions and vocabulary not found in Modern Javanese literature. The light-hearted story providing these examples is taken from the Panji Paniba . This early nineteenth-century text belongs to a famous group of Javanese roma…

  • The ideal match; Views on marriage in Panji Paniba (1816)

Open Access•Willem Van Der Molen•ARTICLE•Wacana Journal of the Humanities…•2020

Panji Paniba of 1816 is a Panji story. It is built on a plot which is characteristic of Panji stories: four Javanese kingdoms in a Hindu setting, a princess who disappears and a prince, her fiancé, who finds her again. Another characteristic of Panji tales is the happy ending of marriages and successions to thrones. Interestingly in Panji Paniba a foreign king has a role to play. Crucial to our understanding of this particular version of Panji st…

  • Java in Jerusalem

Open Access•R Ricci, Willem Van Der Molen•ARTICLE•Archipel•2019

Introduction Although the Israel Institute for Advanced Studies of the Hebrew University on principle welcomes any interesting topic of research, Javanese literature must have been quite out of the ordinary even for this open-minded Institute. Nevertheless, it accepted the proposal that was submitted by Ronit Ricci under the title “New Directions in the Study of Javanese Literature.” And so it came about that a group of seven Javanists from aroun…

  • Traces of the Ramayana and Mahabharata in Javanese and Malay Literature

Choo Ming Ding, Willem Van Der Molen•EDITOR•BOOK•Traces of the Ramayana and…•2018

Local renderings of the two Indian epics Ramayana and Mahabharata in Malay and Javanese literature have existed since around the ninth and tenth centuries. In the following centuries new versions were created alongside the old ones, and these opened up interesting new directions. They questioned the views of previous versions and laid different accents, in a continuous process of modernization and adaptation, successfully satisfying the curiosity…

  • The art of storytelling in Old Javanese prose as illustrated by the story of Ekalawya

Open Access•Willem Van Der Molen•ARTICLE•Wacana Journal of the Humanities…•2017

Scholarly attention for Old Javanese literature so far has mainly focused on poetry. The apparently simple nature of narrative prose texts, while making them excellent sources for linguistic and lexicographic research, at the same time denies them any literary value. In this article an impression is given of the art of storytelling in one Old Javanese prose story, taken from the Adiparwa of around A.D. 1000. Quite unexpectedly, a sophisticated tr…

  • Sajarah Cina A nineteenth-century apology in Javanese

Open Access•Willem Van Der Molen•ARTICLE•Wacana Journal of the Humanities…•2017•Cited by: 1

The sometimes precarious position of the Chinese in Indonesia has a long history. The (most probably) nineteenth-century author, Apdul Mutalip, advocated a more balanced view by pointing out some fundamental contributions the Chinese had made to the welfare of the Javanese; he also demonstrates that their presence in Java has a basis in law. Although seems like a poem in Javanese metre, his Sajarah Cina, written in Javanese, is remarkable not onl…

  • A Jawi Sourcebook for the Study of Malay Palaeography and Orthography

Annabel Teh Gallop, Wan Ali Wan Mamat et al.•ARTICLE•Indonesia and the Malay World•2015

This special issue of Indonesia and the Malay World was compiled by friends and colleagues as a tribute to Professor E. Ulrich Kratz's three decades of teaching Jawi and traditional Malay literature at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, and to mark his 70th birthday on 14 October 2014. Reflecting Ulrich's deep interest in Malay manuscript texts and letters over many years (see the list of publications compiled by He…

  • Dharmawangśa’s heritage On the appreciation of the Old Javanese Mahābhārata

Open Access•Willem Van Der Molen•ARTICLE•Wacana Journal of the Humanities…•2010•Cited by: 1

As we all know, the Old Javanese Mahābhārata was not created from scratch by a Javanese author but was translated (in some sense) from the Sanskrit. The story of Hiḍimbī reveals an interesting difference between the Old Javanese version and the Sanskrit version of the text. In the latter2 Hiḍimbī appeals to Kuntī, Bhīma’s mother, after Bhīma keeps rejecting her. However, it is not Kuntī who gives the answer but Yudhiṣṭhira, her son: he is the one…

  • Literature as a source for history The case of the Repen Ripangi (1886)

Open Access•Willem Van Der Molen•ARTICLE•Wacana Journal of the Humanities…•2008

  • The Syair of Minye Tujuh

Open Access•Willem Van Der Molen•ARTICLE•Bijdragen tot de taal- land- en…•2008•Cited by: 4•References: 2

The allegedly satisfactory state of affairs suggested by the above quotation relates to one of the most intriguing inscriptions of the Indonesian archipelago, the Malay poem on one of the two tombstones (nisan) of a princess in Minye Tujuh, Aceh. This inscription, dated 781 AH (1380 AD), is written not in the usual Arabic script but in so-called Old Sumatran characters. The particular style which caught the attention of the Dutch epigrapher J.G. …

  • A Land Overflowing with Milk And Honey

Willem Van Der Molen•ARTICLE•Indonesia and the Malay World•2006

Travelogues appeared during the beginning of modern Javanese literature i.e. from mid-19th century, concentrating on noteworthy facts from the visible world as in Candranegara's Lampah-lampahipun Raden Mas Arya Purwalelana (1865). Examined in chronological order these travelogues present a gradually widening circle of interest, from Java via the outer islands to the world outside. One of the intermediate circles, that of Batavia, is described by …
