This article explains how the Cuban Revolution managed to build, from the disadvantaged position of a small southern country with no natural resources – and under US sanctions – a comprehensive, universal, effective, and free public health system (Section 1). It then examines the origins and development of its local pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries (Section 2), as well as the main players in medical research and their recent advances (…

Healthcare System and Pharmaceutical and Biotechnological Industries in Cuba
This second of two articles explains how the Cuban Revolution built its internationalist health missions. It also analyzes the measures taken on the island by health authorities against the COVID-19 pandemic, the originality of the health and medical research systems within the framework of a socialist society, as well as the problems faced, largely attributable to the US embargo

The profound ongoing crisis has provided an opportunity for a reemergence of the arguments of John Maynard Keynes. “Keynesian” interpretations of the current crisis are numerous. Most of them only formulate what are bland “reformist” visions, aimed at the introduction of minimal alterations to the functioning of the capitalist system in order to make it survive. The article first analyzes the links between Keynes and the economic mainstream of hi…
A few thoughts on the Cuban economy Following a very brief presentation of the pre-1959 situation in Cuba, an assessment is made of the Cuban revolution's major advances and real shortcomings in the economy up till the recent dedollarization. Emphasis is laid on the economic challenges, as well as on the internal advantages and external opportunities related to them, with which the island has to cope at the start of the 21st century. Proposals ar…

De-Dollarizing Cuba
On October 25, 2004, the Cuban government announced that the dollar was no longer authorized to circulate on the island. It justified this decision as a reaction to the U.S. blockade tightening, in particular as to financial transfers. The de-dollarizing process is a complex, original phenomenon, relatively little studied in the economic literature. It has to be understood in the perspective of the dollarization applied ten years before to be ana…

New STR at the D5S373 locus and its relevance in human population studies
The genetic analysis of a new trinucleotide repeat (D5S373) was carried out with a view to its application in both individual genetic profiling and human population genetics. In a screening analysis from seven world populations (n = 706) and after nucleotide sequence analysis, up to nine alleles were found corresponding to 8–13 repetitions of a TAA motif. This analysis shows He values ranging between 0.689–0.762. D5S373 reveals interpopulational …
La contrainte extérieure cubaine
Remy Herrera and Isaac Johsua — Cuba : The external constraint. After recalling the importance of the external constraint weighing on the Cuban economy and the ancient roots of dependence vis-à-vis the exterior, the article describes the strategy of development envisaged after the revolution and underlines the impact of the embargo imposed on the island by the United States. The essential role played by the restriction of imports during the crisi…
La dollarisation cubaine
Paulo Nakatani and Rémy Herrera — The dollar-Cuba : Elements of reflection for a dollar-disengagement. This article first proposes to the reader a historical perspective explaining how today's conversion of Cuba into a dollar economy differs from that of the pre- revolutionary period. Secondly, it analyses the causes and mechanisms of the current dollar-conversion, accompanied by an assessment of its economic and social consequences. Thirdly, it …

Historical evidences of streamflow fluctuations in the Mendoza River, Argentina, and their relationship with Enso
Documentary sources are used to construct records of high and low flows of the Mendoza River and to relate these to ENSO over the historical period. The historical data are calibrated against measured discharge (ad 1909–1940) and validated by precipitation discharge-series reconstructed from tree-rings (ad 1600–1960). An increase in the number of high-streamflow events since the mid-seventeenth century is accompanied by several intervals with an …

A Disaggregated Model of Urban Spatial Structure
This paper describes a disaggregated model of urban spatial structure which combines the framework provided by the macroscale approach of social physics, to which most models developed to date belong, and the advantages derived from the use of the microscale approach provided by economic theory. The model attempts to integrate both approaches by means of the use of maximum entropy techniques together with concepts from microeconomic theory. The f…
