Barriers and Facilitators of Cardiac Rehabilitation in a Middle-Income Country: A Qualitative Study from China
More awareness regarding the effectiveness of CR is needed. Implementing CR in secondary and primary health institutions could overcome the barriers regarding travel distance and transportation to faraway hospitals. The CR reimbursement methods are needed to ease the financial burden on patients. Our findings reveal factors that need to be considered by policymakers to deliver CR on a wider scale in China
Tapering Antidepressants While Receiving Digital Preventive Cognitive Therapy During Pregnancy: An Experience Sampling Methodology Trial
Background: Previous studies indicated that affect fluctuations, the use of antidepressant medication (ADM), as well as depression during pregnancy might have adverse effects on offspring outcomes. The aim of the current proof-of-principle study is to explore the effect of tapering ADM while receiving online preventive cognitive therapy (PCT) on pregnant women and the offspring as compared to pregnant women continuing ADM. Objectives: We sought t…
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Antenatal Depression in a Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial and Effects on Neurobiological, Behavioral and Cognitive Outcomes in Offspring 3–7 Years Postpartum: A Pers…
Our explorative findings suggest that antenatal depression treatment decreases overall child DNA-methylation, increases cortical thickness, and decreases white matter fiber-bundle cross-section in regions involved in cognitive function and the stress response. Nevertheless, larger studies are warranted to confirm our preliminary conclusion that CBT in pregnancy alters neurobiological outcomes in children. Clinical relevance remains unclear as we …
What If Pregnancy Is Not Seventh Heaven? The Influence of Specific Life Events during Pregnancy and Delivery on the Transition of Antenatal into Postpartum Anxiety and Depression
Women with increased antenatal levels of anxiety or depression symptoms are at increased risk of elevated levels of both postpartum depression and anxiety symptoms. Experiencing life events during pregnancy that were not related to the pregnancy was associated with higher levels of anxiety and depression in the postpartum period, as opposed to pregnancy-related events, delivery complications, or unfavorable obstetric outcomes. These results sugge…
Brain Magnetic Resonance Imaging Findings in Children after Antenatal Maternal Depression Treatment, a Longitudinal Study Built on a Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial
Antenatal depression is associated with an increased risk of offspring neuro-developmental disorders, potentially as a consequence of an altered brain development in utero . We hypothesized that reducing maternal depression by Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) during pregnancy may ameliorate the offspring's brain (micro)structural outcomes. 54 pregnant women with a diagnosed clinical depression were randomly allocated to CBT or Treatment as Usua…
Perceived School Safety is Strongly Associated with Adolescent Mental Health Problems
The Temporal Relation Between Pain and Depression: Results From the Longitudinal Aging Study Amsterdam
OBJECTIVE: Pain and depression are both common in old age, but their (long-term) temporal relationship remains unknown. This study is designed to determine whether pain predicts the onset of depression and vice versa. METHODS: This is a prospective, population-based cohort study with 12-year follow-up and 3-year intervals in the Netherlands (Longitudinal Aging Study Amsterdam). At baseline, participants were aged 55 to 85 years (n = 2028). Main m…
Prevention of false positive findings in observational studies: Registration will not work but replication might
obtaining positive findings. In this editorial, we will explore two potential solutions to reduce the risk of false positive findings from observational studies: a registration requirement; and a replication requirement
Parental psychopathology and socioeconomic position predict adolescent offspring's mental health independently and do not interact: The TRAILS study
BACKGROUND: Familial risk factors have been implicated in the development of mental health problems in adolescents. Whether the associations between parental loading, as assessed by lifetime psychopathology, and offspring internalising and externalising problems were moderated by family socioeconomic position (SEP) was investigated. Two hypotheses of moderation were tested: (1) the "social push" hypothesis in which parental loading effects are st…
Teacher Ratings of Children's Behavior Problems and Functional Impairment Across Gender and Ethnicity: Construct Equivalence of the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire
The present study examined construct equivalence of the teacher Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire and compared mean scores in an ethnically diverse sample of children living in the Netherlands. Elementary schoolteachers completed the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire for 2,185 children aged 6 to 10 years of the four largest ethnic groups in the Netherlands, namely native Dutch ( n = 684) and Moroccan ( n = 702), Turkish ( n = 434), …
Depressive Symptoms in Subjects With Diagnosed and Undiagnosed Type 2 Diabetes
Objective: To investigate if disturbed glucose homeostasis or known diagnosis of diabetes was associated with depressive symptoms. The reason for the increased prevalence of depression in patients with Type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2) is unknown. Methods: Within the Utrecht Health Project, an ongoing longitudinal study among inhabitants of a residential area of a large city in The Netherlands, 4747 subjects (age: 39.4 ± 12.5 years) were classified …
A glossary on psychiatric epidemiology
Psychiatric epidemiology constitutes an important subdiscipline of scientific psychiatry. Nevertheless, it still lags behind other branches of epidemiology. This has been attributed to the difficulties encountered in conceptualising and measuring mental disorders.1 It is only recently that the emphasis in the field has shifted from descriptive to analytical research and this is probably because of the influences from genetic epidemiology and soci…
The micro-grading of procedural words as a metric of behaviors: The evolutionary sequenceability of verbs
Roget, Darwin, & Bohr: Parallelizing Evolutionary Diversification with Conceptual Classification
Onrushing cultural changes, exemplified by Artificial Intelligence, make it desirable to ‘correspond’ world structure with language. An occasion to test ideals has occurred with the modernization of a best-selling vocabulary finder: Roget's Thesaurus (by Betty Kirkpatrick for the original publisher, Longman). Roget did not pioneer synonymies. He probably did pioneer conceptual ‘stairstepping’ interrupted by subdivisions, here termed Quintilianism…

Behavior Modification and Operant Psychology: An Anthropological Critique
Operant behaviorism is, in today's United States, a major branch of academic and of applied psychology. Yet I shall argue that its cross-cultural application (by Anglos, whether to minority enclaves or overseas) is fallacious. Incidental to or excluded from this discussion are its application to (1) subhuman animals, where I gladly concede its efficacy; (2) humans handicapped in or related to the brain/the emotions: and (3) Anglos (Yankees), beca…

Ethno-Janus”: Utilizing Cultural Heritage to Plan for Future Employment
The suddenly fashionable ethnic-heritage studies may in fact misfit a cultural group's present and future. They glorify a past that is probably no longer viable. But in a practical approach, only such heritage should be selected as may be relevant to the predictable future. In this connection, Gause's Principle suggests advantage in specialization rather than in imitation and emulation of dominant culture neighbors. Hence occupational need foreca…
“Ethnonics”: Converting Spanish Speakers' Ethnography for Directed Change
Missionary educators sometimes lack the freedom to design educational programs which fit the cultures of their students. More often, they lack the necessary cross-cultural insight. The result (this was the editor's experience during six years as a teacher in the Central African Republic) is that most schools in non-Western countries are far too much like equivalent schools in the country of origin of the curriculum designer, and are poorly adapte…

Syncretism, An Acculturative Accelerator
This analysis seeks to codify syncretistic culture changes, whether they arise within one society (endogenously) or otherwise (exogenously), and whether or not performed consciously (directedly). Omitted from the present article are the following factors, which, although concededly important, may be codified separately: change causes, sources, channels; identification of ethos and eidos; changeability of the society and of the innovation; change …
