Boards of Directors in New Ventures
Board independence is an important element in the perception of the quality of a firm's governance. This issue, however, can be exacerbated for new ventures because the CEOs are often the founders. For the new venture, then, it is possible that (i) the founder is the CEO , (ii) the founder is also the board chairperson, and (iii) the board is not independent. Importantly, the perceived lack of independent governance in a new venture can adversely…
Board Structure and Composition
Board structure refers to whether the chief executive officer ( CEO ) concurrently serves as chairperson of the board of directors. Board composition refers to the relative proportions of inside (management) and outside directors. While these two board configurations are most salient in the corporate context (i.e., firms whose stock is publicly traded), private firms, too, rely on boards of directors to enhance firm effectiveness.
On the Use of "Intent to…" Variables in Organizational Research
Organizational research often relies on surrogate variables. By "surrogate" we do not refer to family of construct, factor, or latent variables. Rather, we address the situation where one variable is literally the substitute for another variable that is generally unavailable. Consider, for example, the use of "intent to turnover" or "intent to transfer" variables commonly used when actual turnover or transfer data are unavailable. We demonstrate …

Development and Psychometric Properties of the Organizational Diversity Inventory (ODI)
A newly developed 20-item Organizational Diversity Inventory (ODI) is described. A battery of 200 statements dealing with various aspects of diversity was evaluated as to the statements' relevancy by a diverse group of 40 middle managers. Thirty-five items were selected for further exploration. Four hundred and fifty managerial employees from 27 organizations completed this 35-item inventory. Relying on half of the sample, a factor analytic solut…
The Iron Law of Paternalism
We relied on 372 justice procedures in the workplace (arbitral hearings) to assess the viability of the “iron law of paternalism,” a thesis essentially arguing that women will receive more lenient outcomes. With severity of the offense invariant, these data provide no support for this thesis in the workplace
Development and Psychometric Properties of the Decision Conflict and Cooperation Questionnaire (DCCQ)
Research examining the positive effects of cognitive conflict and controversy has relied largely on laboratory protocol and case studies. This work develops a field-based instrument to assess decision conflict and cooperation. This study of 63 practicing managers indicates a robust three factor solution for the 10 item DCCQ instrument
Psychometric Properties of the Organizational Citizenship Behavior Scale
Recent work indicates some dissensus with regard to the psychometric properties of the Organizational Citizenship Behavior (OCB) scale. This study (n=264) indicates a robust four factor solution for the 16-item OCB questionnaire
Competition and Cooperation
Two studies were conducted in order to investigate the effects of cooperation and competition on performance and satisfaction. In Study One, it was hypothesized that the effects of cooperation vs. competition may be exacerbated by perceptions of value differences. Value dissensus did interact with the cooperation-competition variable for the satisfaction measure, but not for the performance measure. A main effect for performance was found, howeve…
Of the Psychometric Properties of the Manifest Needs Questionnaire
Recent work has questioned the psychometric properties of the Manifest Needs Questionnaire. The present analysis suggests that this instrument's subscales exhibit unacceptably low levels of internal consistency. Moreover, the factor structure of this instrument does not coincide with that suggested by the existing version of the questionnaire. The rather harsh admonition that “the MNQ does not seem well suited for organizational studies” may have…
Psychometric Properties of the Central Life Interest Inventory
Recent work has questioned the psychometric properties of the Central Life Interest Inventory. This study of 173 subjects ranging from office clerks to corporate vice presidents demonstrated acceptable coefficients of stability for that instrument under a variety of assumptions and methods. An admonition to reassess conceptual and empirical work relying on this instrument may have been premature
Male and Female Stewards' Grievance Behavior
The union steward, a critical actor in the grievance process, has been virtually overlooked in empirical research. Specifically, while effects of sex in the workplace have been documented, these effects in union stewards remain unexplored. This research indicates significant differences in the number of grievances filed, frequency of informally resolving grievances with supervision, and frequency of counseling potential grievants not to file betw…
