Pirates the Czech way: Sailing (unsuccessfully) from the “Rebel Bay” to the calm waters of neoliberal mainstream
The paper aims to contribute to the ongoing debate on the transformation and mainstreaming of new, particularly anti-establishment, parties as they enter the system and assume governmental positions. To demonstrate how participation in government can foster the mainstreaming of a formerly challenger (protest) party, this study examines how the Czech Pirate Party and its representatives have altered the framing of their communication. Using the ca…
Applicability of quantitatively predictive logical models at subnational level of governance: Testing the Seat Product Model on Polish, Czech, Hungarian and Slovak regional elections
Strategic voting in two-round elections: Confirming the learning hypothesis in the Czech presidential elections of 2013–2023
In the Name of “Freedom” and “Democracy
This article examines the rise of the populist radical right in the Czech Republic, where this party family had no parliamentary representation for many years. We show that by clarifying its ideological profile, the SPD achieved results in accordance with the social marginality and welfare chauvinism hypothesis. This is also confirmed by a spatial analysis, which shows that success of the SPD relied especially on mobilizing voters in traditional …
Malapportionment in Mongolian elections: Does institutional structure matter
This article examines malapportionment in Mongolia from the introduction of a unicameral parliament in 1992 to the parliamentary elections in 2016. We especially address the question whether the level of malapportionment was significantly influenced by various types of electoral systems at both national and district levels. Due to its frequent electoral engineering, Mongolia can serve as a very useful case for testing the relationship between lev…
Desirability of office and previous female representation as main factors of female candidacy and representation in Czech municipalities, 1998–2018
On the Way to Limited Competitiveness: Political Consequences of the 2011 Electoral Reform in Hungary
This article tests the effects of a new electoral system in Hungary that was introduced by the governing FIDESZ party in 2011. We are especially concerned with the shape of single‐member district (SMD) level electoral competition following a significant transformation that tends to be viewed as serving FIDESZ's goal of preserving its constitutional majority. The results show not only transformation of Hungarian electoral politics between 2010 and…
Women and Local Politics: Determinants of Women’s Emergence and Success in Elections to Czech Town Councils, 1998–2018
The main objective of this paper is to analyse where women run for and win seats in local councils of Czech towns between 1998 and 2018. Our results are to some extent contradictory to those from Western Europe. More importantly, this study demonstrates that strategic context impacts on women’s emergence and success in local elections in a different way. First, we do not confirm that larger towns are more promising for women’s representation. Whi…
Mapping the Territorial Distribution of Voter Turnout in Czech Local Elections (1994–2018)
This article analyzes voter turnout in the Czech Republic on a very detailed spatial structure and an extended yearly time series (1994–2018). Its main goal is to examine the spatial dimension of the disparities in voter turnout in local elections at the level of all (more than 6,000) Czech municipalities. To achieve this goal, global and local spatial autocorrelation methods are used. Municipality-level cartographic presentations then provide sp…
Spatial Dimensions of Female Political Participation: Regional Perspective of Women’s Descriptive Representation in Czech Local Councils, 1994–2018
This paper focusses on the analysis of female political participation in the decision-making processes at the local level. We analyse women’s descriptive representation in Czechia on a very detailed spatial structure and an extended yearly time series (1994–2018). The main goal of the paper is to examine the spatial dimension of the disparities in female representation in local elections at the level of all Czech municipalities. To achieve this g…
Crossing the left-right party divide? Understanding the electoral success of the Czech Pirate Party in the 2017 parliamentary elections
In the 2017 Czech parliamentary election, the Czech Pirate Party (Pirates) gained 10.79% of the votes – an unprecedented success, compared to most of the pirate parties across Europe. However, as their electoral gain varies widely across the Czech Republic’s territory, this article analyses all (more than 6000) Czech municipalities in the elections of 2010, 2013, and 2017 to explain this variation. Overall, the success of the Pirates was driven e…
The rise of new populist political parties in Czech parliamentary elections between 2010 and 2017: The geography of party replacement
This article examines the territorialization of party replacement in the Czech Republic between 2010 and 2017. Using spatial analytical techniques, we found that despite the significant success of new populist parties, which considerably transformed the parliamentary strength of individual parties, the "new" geographical patterning of party support was far from real transformation. Historically, most of the rightist and center-right parties relie…
Ticket splitting, strategic voting and personal vote in the 2012 Mongolian elections
This article examines ticket splitting under Mongolia's new mixed-member majoritarian system used for the elections in 2012, reaching several conclusions. First, we confirm that strategic ticket splitting depends on party size, as especially candidates of larger parties receive, on average, more district votes. Second, we show that strategic voting is not a universal phenomenon under the Mongolian mixed-member majoritarian system. Finally, as per…
The Representation of Women in the Position of Mayor in the Czech Republic and Slovakia in 2006-2014: A Comparative Analysis of the Factors of Success
Main objective of this article is to analyse political determinants of the descriptive representation of women at the local level in communal elections (i.e. the position of mayor) in the Czech Republic and Slovakia over the past decade. It focuses on the political opportunity structure (i.e. the structure of relationships that affect social and political behaviour) and questions whether this structure affects also women's political representatio…
The 2016 Electoral Reform in Mongolia: From Mixed System and Multiparty Competition to FPTP and One-Party Dominance
This article tests the effects of a new electoral system that was introduced in Mongolia for the June 2016 elections. The decision to implement a first-past-the-post (FPTP) system instead of a mixed-member majoritarian (MMM) system, which was first and last used in the previous elections of 2012, was due to the April 2016 ruling of the Mongolian Constitutional Court on unconstitutionality of the list tier as one of the mechanisms for distributing…
A Spatial Analysis of Czech Parliamentary Elections, 2006–2013
This article presents a spatial analysis of the parliamentary elections in the Czech Republic between 2006 and 2013. Among most political parties with long-term parliamentary representation, right-wing parties had higher support in areas with a high development potential and left-wing parties in areas with a low development potential. However, similar congruence between electoral support and development potential was not found in the case of most…
Testing Duvergerʼs law: Strategic voting in Mongolian elections, 1996–2004
Recent empirical research on voting in single-member districts, based on extensive data-sets of election results, has demonstrated the general (although not universal) validity of Duverger’s law (i.e. that the average outcome under plurality rule is generally consistent with two-party competition). This article tests Duverger’s law through analysis of a data-set covering Mongolian parliamentary elections in the period of 1996–2004. The results sh…
