The Russian language of Odesa: Simplification and Reduction of Grammatical Complexity
Argument Case Leveling toward Genitive: An Unexpected Outcome in a Language Contact Situation
This article contributes to the study of a productive morphosyntactic mechanism in a peculiar type of linguistic variety, the Russian language of Odessa (OdR). This variety was born as a lingua franca in the city of Odessa soon after its foundation, implying the massive acquisition of the Russian language in a nonnative way in its initial stages. Afterwards, it was transmitted to successive generations as a native variety, albeit preserving some …
The interplay of semantic and formal factors in Russian morphosyntax: Animate paucal constructions in direct object function
Formal mismatches and functional advantage in syntactic change: The case of Old and Middle Russian non-verbal predicates
This paper relies on the idea that syntactic change stems from linguistic factors that are different in nature and, consequently, trigger different results. Specifically, I distinguish the causes, processes and results related to two different kinds of syntactic change, a ‘formal’ type of change vs. a ‘functional’ one. The hypotheses pursued here are the following: (i) Mismatches between the formal features a learner has acquired and certain data…
Infinitive clauses and dative subjects in Russian
Argument structure and syntactic relations: A Cross-Linguistic Perspective
The topic of this collection is argument structure. The fourteen chapters in this book are divided into four parts: Semantic and Syntactic Properties of Event Structure; A Cartographic View on Argument Structure; Syntactic Heads Involved in Argument Structure; and Argument Structure in Language Acquisition. Rigorous theoretical analyses are combined with empirical work on specific aspects of argument structure. The book brings together authors wo…
