    Open Access•Wenfan Yan, Eugene L Gaier•ARTICLE•Journal of Cross-Cultural…•1994•Citada por: 8•Referencias: 13

This study compared possible causal attributions for college success and failure in American and Asian students via a sample of 358 undergraduate students who were administered the Multidimensional-Multi-Attribution Causality Scale. American, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Southeast Asian subjects reported a pattern of "effort ability-task-luck" forboth success and failure. The "self-serving bias" in attribution was supported only for the factor …

    Eugene L Gaier, Marie Dellas•ARTICLE•Theory Into Practice•1971•Referencias: 22

It has become a psychological truism that the kinds of information selected and utilized by the individual are intimately related to success in problem solving and concept formation (Stafford, 1966). That creative endeavor appears to be the outcome of the ability to take familiar information and rearrange it into new and meaningful patterns also appears well documented in the psychological literature. But the exact nature of the process that lead…

Eugene L Gaier, William A Watts•ARTICLE•The Journal of Negro Education•1969

The new norms confronting the incoming college student, with the subsequent challenges and reorganization of familiar behavior patterns, are intensified for students who are educationally and socially mobile. Typically, college attendance for Negro students reflects a pattern of upward mobility. Negro colleges have been a major agency for selecting and socializing as well as providing credentials for upward mobility.1 For the white student, colle…

One of the major by-products of research into the differences between intelligence, per se, and creativity-precipitated in a large part by the work of Getzels and Jackson'-is intensified effort to isolate and identify the parameters of behavior associated with creativity. The earlier works of Guilford,2,3 followed by the isolation and identification of the factors of human intellect by factor analytic techniques, have led to the development of in…

  • Effects of City Familiarity on Size Estimation

    Open Access•Eugene L Gaier, Bernard M Bass•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1956

This study is a demonstration of a common perceptual distortion caused by the logical fallacy of affirming the consequences. When the proposition If A, then B is true, an error is commonly made in inferring that If B, then A. This error produces a distorted judgment. For example, we tend to be more familiar with larger cities. We, therefore judge more familiar cities to be larger. The results below corroborate these propositions and illustrate th…
