Se calculó la tasa bruta de homicidio doloso (intencional) en la población total de Costa Rica y las tasas de las poblaciones de costarricenses y de nicaragüenses, residentes en el país. Relationship of upper body fat distribution to serum glucose and lipids in a Costa Rican population
Present models of the relation between subcutaneous fat distribution and serum biochemistries have been based largely on U.S. White populations. To determine interpopulational differences in that relation, we measured 68 clinically normal adult Costa Ricans aged 17–32. Data collected included six skinfolds: triceps, subscapular, suprailiac, umbilical, anterior midthigh, and medial calf; height, weight, and four fasting serum parameters: glucose, …
Antenatal events and postnatal growth and survival of children in a rural Guatemalan village
The biological features of all pregnant women and newborn infants in a typical rural village of Guatemala have been studied form 1964 to the present; 458 pregnancied have been analysed. The mothers averaged 143.1 cm in height 52.9 kg in weight and 9 mm in triceps skinfold. The diet of most was adequate in percentage protein but inadequate in iron and other nutrients. Infection was common, two or more episodes occurring in 40 per cent of pregnanci…
Malnutrition and infection in a typical rural Guatemalan Village
A long‐term prospective study of fetal and postnatal growth and possible influences on growth was initiated in 1963 in a Guatemalan village. A high proportion of the infants were of low birth weight and they were more at risk to death in the first year of life than infants with higher birth weights. Levels of immunoglobulin M (IgM) in cord blood of Latin American newborns of low socioeconomic status
While studying the ecology of fetal malnutrition, levels of cord serum IgM were determined by radial immuno‐diffusion in cord blood taken from seven groups of newborns. Group 1 was selected among the high socioeconomic Peruvian urban population. The other six groups were from the low socioeconomic strata of Peru and Guatemala (Ladino and Indian, urban and rural), among whom, very poor environmental conditions prevailed.
