Employer and Employee Preferences for Worker Benefits
We study the working conditions of low-skilled workers in a developing country, Bangladesh, to shed light on the conditions workers value and employers may be willing to provide. Using a carefully designed choice experiment embedded in a unique survey of employers and employees, we elicit preferences for compensation, leave and termination policies, working hours, overtime pay, and accident compensation. Workers value termination notice and accid…
Online Outsourcing
In this Perspective, the authors review potential benefits and drawbacks of online outsourcing, including microwork and freelancing, with special reference to its potential for youth employment and poverty reduction in Indonesia. Although there are many constraints to the growth of online outsourcing, Indonesia's favorable business environment and large economy suggest that there is also significant potential for expansion of online outsourcing.
Recovery in the U.S. Virgin Islands

The authors focused on crosscutting capacities needed for implementation, infrastructure, and the economy and public services and provide 76 recommendations to enhance recovery efforts, including steps to support implementation.
Building Community Resilience to Large Oil Spills
The 2010 Deepwater Horizon (DWH) oil spill was the largest in U.S. history, releasing an estimated 4.9 million barrels of oil into the Gulf of Mexico. In this report, the authors explore how communities, government officials, nongovernmental organizations, businesses, and scientists can build community resilience to large oil spills
Advancing community resilience research and practice
Research and practice aimed at enhancing community resilience to disasters such as hurricanes have focused primarily on the survival of individuals and the development of social capital and networks. Less consideration has been given to the dynamics of social-ecological conditions that can govern post-disaster outcomes. This article provides a rationale for moving research and practice towards an adaptive systems framework, drawing on the cascadi…
Transitions between informal and formal employment
We study transitions between different types of formal and informal employment using retrospective job histories from a new survey in Bangladesh. Workers transitioning between jobs are most likely to remain in the same type of employment, although there is still substantial churn across employment types. Private wage employees have higher probability of transitioning to a new job, and changes in earnings and benefits suggest evidence of upward mo…
Opportunities for All
Over 5 million Syrian refugees entered Turkey, Jordan, and Lebanon due to the civil war. This report examines the labor market for refugees in these countries. In Turkey, a barrier was speaking Turkish; in Jordan and Lebanon, the refugees' arrival exacerbated existing economic slowdowns. Working legally was a challenge for all. Recommendations are tailored to each country in order to improve the socioeconomic environment for all.
Transitions Between Informal and Formal Employment
We document transitions between different types of formal and informal employment using retrospective job histories from a new survey of 2,000 workers in two metropolitan areas of Bangladesh. We find that workers transitioning between jobs are most likely to remain in the same type of employment, but that there is substantial churn across employment types. Private wage employees are most likely to transition to a new job, and the observed changes…
Strict duality and overlapping productivity distributions between formal and informal firms
