Clinical PsychologyAuthor'S Note
The field of clinical psychology was founded in 1896 by Lightner Witmer, a professor at the University of Pennsylvania and at first was focused on the evaluation and remediation of the academic and behavior problems of school-age children. Over time, clinical psychology gradually become a close cousin of the more ancient field of medicine. The Effect of the First Child on the Marital Relationship
Couples expecting their first child completed the LockeWallace Marital Adjustment Scale and the Bem Sex Role Inventory during the last trimester of the wife's pregnancy, and again after the birth of the baby. In partial replication of previous research, it was found that wives' marital adjustment scores were significantly lower following the birth. Item analysis showed that the wives' overall ratings of happiness and their relative dominance in d…

The Influence of Categories of Cumulative Folder Information on Teacher Referrals of Low-achieving Children for Special Educational Services
Artificial cumulative folders were constructed, each purporting to reference a fourth grade boy with average ability but low academic achievement. The eight folders factorially varied three categories of information: presence or absence of comments concerning previous misbehavior, race (black or white), and parents’ educational level (some high school or postsecondary). A random sample of 104 central North Carolina elementary teachers examined th…

Instructions, Word Association, and the Hospitalized Psychiatric Patient
Hospitalized psychiatric patients who had high scores on MMPI Scale 8 were given word-association tests under three instructions, namely, free association, instructions to give the responses most people would give, and instructions to give responses no one else besides themselves would give. These Ss, in contrast to Ss in previous studies selected for either psychiatric hospitalization or high Scale 8 scores alone, failed to produce a significant…

Short-Term Memory in Normals and Retardates as a Function of Stimulus Intensity and Recall Interval
Two predictions derived from Ellis's (1963) stimulus trace (s t ) deficit theory were tested with equal CA (approximately 9 years) normal and retarded children in a digit recall task. Length of recall interval (0 vs 8 sec.) and intensity level of the aurally presented items (55 vs 90 db) were varied factorially. All of the material was taped and received by subjects through earphones. Contrary to Ellis's theoretical predictions, the two IQ groups…

Minimal Brain Dysfunction in Children
In order to examine covariation among some of the behavioral deviations included in Clements' (1966) monograph on “minimal brain dysfunction syndrome,” 16 measures and ratings were obtained for a sample of 89 children attending a child development clinic. The measures included most of the variables mentioned among the 10 most frequently hypothesized symptoms of the disorder. Few instances of significant relationships were found, especially when a…
