  • The poetic, the personal and the political

    Open Access•Elke Brems, Francis Mus•ARTICLE•chronotopos – A Journal of…•2025

This contribution provides a comparative analysis of two Dutch translations of “L’Internationale”, one made by Henriette Roland Holst in 1900 and the other by Ernst van Altena in 1981, respectively. The comparison is relevant for two reasons: (1) the latter translation can be considered a reaction to the former; and (2) each translator paid particular attention to the literary rather than the musical characteristics of the source text. The lyrics…

  • Between Heimat and world. Belgian perspectives on the success of Felix Timmermans's novel Pallieter (1916) in Germany and France

    Kevin Absillis, Francis Mus•ARTICLE•Perspectives•2024

In 1916, Felix Timmermans unveiled his debut novel, 'Pallieter'. This work emerged as an unequivocal bestseller, within the Dutch-speaking realm but also, thanks to translations by esteemed foreign publishers, resonating far beyond these boundaries. In this contribution, we delve into the impact of this literary work, firmly rooted in an (imagined) Flanders, on both Germany and France. Our analysis begins by shedding light on how Timmermans harne…

    Open Access•Francis Mus•ARTICLE•COnTEXTES.

  • The Demons of Leonard Cohen

Francis Mus, Brian Trehearne et al.•BOOK•Demons of Leonard Cohen•2020

"Who speaks in Leonard Cohen's oeuvre? By identifying the many guises in which Cohen presents himself to his audience, Francis Mus seeks to formulate an answer to this question. The countless roles assumed by Cohen's persona are not some innocent game, but strategies in response to the sometimes conflicting demands of a 'life in art': they serve as masks that represent the performer's face and state of mind in a heightened yet detached way. In an…
