  • Exploring Intonational Contours in Human and Synthetic Speech: An F0-Based Study of Venezuelan Spanish

Open Access•João Paulo Moraes Lima Dos Santos, Eugenia San Segundo•ARTICLE•Cadernos de Linguística e Teoria…•2026

Comparisons between human and synthetic speech reveal that prosodic differences manifest primarily in how pitch develops over time rather than in static acoustic properties. This study investigates how human and synthetic intonation differ in Venezuelan Spanish by analyzing the temporal organization of fundamental frequency (F0) contours in declarative and interrogative sentences. The analysis is based on data from the HABLA corpus, which contain…

  • Formant dynamics of Spanish vocalic sequences in related speakers: A forensic-voice-comparison investigation

    Open Access•Eugenia San Segundo, Junjie Yang•ARTICLE•Journal of Phonetics•2019•Cited by: 2•References: 54

This study investigates the dynamic acoustic properties of 19 vocalic sequences of Standard Peninsular Spanish, showing their potential for forensic voice comparison. Parametric curves (polynomials and discrete cosine transform) were fitted to the formant trajectories of the 19 Spanish vocalic sequences of 54 male speakers, comprising monozygotic (MZ) and dizygotic (DZ) twin pairs, non-twin brothers and unrelated speakers. Using the curve-fitting…

  • The use of the Vocal Profile Analysis for speaker characterization: Methodological proposals

Open Access•Eugenia San Segundo, Paul Foulkes et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of the International…•2019•Cited by: 3•References: 43

Among phoneticians, the Vocal Profile Analysis (VPA) is one of the most widely used methods for the componential assessment of voice quality. Whether the ultimate goal of the VPA evaluation is the comparative description of languages or the characterization of an individual speaker, the VPA protocol shows great potential for different research areas of speech communication. However, its use is not without practical difficulties. Despite these, me…

  • Forensic speaker comparison of Spanish twins and non-twin siblings: A phonetic-acoustic analysis of formant trajectories in vocalic sequences, glottal source parameters and cepstral characteristics

Eugenia San Segundo, Eugenia San Segundo Fernández•ARTICLE•International Journal of Speech…•2015
