Developing and Disseminating Physical Activity Messages Targeting Parents
Through knowledge synthesis, this research can contribute to a knowledge translation process to inform practice guidelines for the development and dissemination of PA messages targeting parents, while also providing unique considerations for PA messages targeting parents of CWD
Canadian 24-Hour Movement Guidelines for Adults aged 18–64 years and Adults aged 65 years or older
The Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology assembled a Consensus Panel representing national organizations, content experts, methodologists, stakeholders, and end-users and followed an established guideline development procedure to create the Canadian 24-Hour Movement Guidelines for Adults aged 18–64 years and Adults aged 65 years or older: An Integration of Physical Activity, Sedentary Behaviour, and Sleep. Understanding quality participation
Individuals with disabilities do not experience full participation in society. Research suggests that a focus on quantity as opposed to quality of participation may be responsible for this disparity. The Quality Parasport Participation Framework was developed to fill this gap by highlighting the PA program conditions and elements indicative of quality experiences. The aim of the current study was to fill remaining knowledge gaps by (a) exploring …
Assessing the social climate of physical (in)activity in Canada
Ecological models suggest that a strategy for increasing physical activity participation within a population is to reconstruct the “social climate”. This can be accomplished through 1) changing norms and beliefs, 2) providing direct support for modifying environments, and 3) implementing policies to encourage physical activity. Nevertheless, surveillance efforts have paid limited attention to empirical assessment of social climate. This study res…
Sedentary Behavior Research Network (SBRN) – Terminology Consensus Project process and outcome
BACKGROUND: The prominence of sedentary behavior research in health science has grown rapidly. With this growth there is increasing urgency for clear, common and accepted terminology and definitions. Such standardization is difficult to achieve, especially across multi-disciplinary researchers, practitioners, and industries. The Sedentary Behavior Research Network (SBRN) undertook a Terminology Consensus Project to address this need. METHOD: Firs…
Formulation of evidence-based messages to promote the use of physical activity to prevent and manage Alzheimer’s disease
Public health and other organizations that promote physical activity, health and well-being to older adults are encouraged to use the evidence-based statement in their programs and resources. Researchers, clinicians, people with Alzheimer's disease and caregivers are encouraged to adopt the messaging statement and the recommendations in the companion informational resource
Canadian 24-Hour Movement Guidelines for Children and Youth
Leaders from the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology convened representatives of national organizations, content experts, methodologists, stakeholders, and end-users who followed rigorous and transparent guideline development procedures to create the Canadian 24-Hour Movement Guidelines for Children and Youth: An Integration of Physical Activity, Sedentary Behaviour, and Sleep. These novel guidelines for children and youth aged 5–17 years re…
Evidence-informed recommendations for constructing and disseminating messages supplementing the new Canadian Physical Activity Guidelines
To our knowledge, these are the first set of evidence-informed recommendations for constructing and disseminating messages supplementing physical activity guidelines. This project also represents the first application of international standards for guideline development (i.e., AGREE II) to the creation of practical recommendations specifically aimed to inform health promotion and public health practice. The messaging recommendations have the pote…
Gaining perspective
This study examined how framed messages affect viewer attention to and cognitive processing of osteoporosis prevention print ads. Attention was measured with eye tracking technology. Cognitive processing was assessed through masked recall. A total of 60 college-aged women viewed 12 gain-framed, 12 loss-framed, and 12 neutral-framed ads. Number of fixations, dwell time, and recall of gain-framed osteoporosis prevention ads were higher than loss-fr…
