  • Trauma coping of mothers and children among poor people in Haiti: Mixed methods study of community-level research

Gargi Roysircar, Ashland Thompson et al.•ARTICLE•American Psychologist•2019•Cited by: 1

A qualitative interview is sensitive to social complexities and personal subjectivities, whereas quantitative assessment relies on preexisting frameworks to place responses in hierarchical frequencies and counts individual experiences as an additive aggregate. Using both enquiries, a mixed methods sequential exploratory design studied mothers' focus groups and their children's trauma assessment in 3 poor communities in the outskirts of Port-au-Pr…

The House-Tree-Person (HTP) drawing test has been culturally adapted for Haitian children and objectively scored for resilience and vulnerability (Roysircar, Colvin, Afolayan, Thompson, & Robertson, 2017). The HTP was used to assess 88 Haitian children's adjustment to the 2010 earthquake and the continuous trauma of societal inequalities. The study examined the validity of the adapted HTP test and its dimensionality. The study included participan…

  • The Matching Criterion Purification for Differential Item Functioning Analyses in a Large-Scale Assessment

    Open Access•HyeSun Lee, Kurt F Geisinger•ARTICLE•Educational and Psychological…•2016

The current study investigated the impact of matching criterion purification on the accuracy of differential item functioning (DIF) detection in large-scale assessments. The three matching approaches for DIF analyses (block-level matching, pooled booklet matching, and equated pooled booklet matching) were employed with the Mantel–Haenszel procedure. Five factors—the length of a test, the proportion of items exhibiting DIF, a sample size, a ratio …

  • Assessing the Assessments of Teacher Preparation

    Mary M Brabeck, Mary Brabeck et al.•ARTICLE•Theory Into Practice•2016•Cited by: 4•References: 11

Teacher preparation programs have both a desire and a responsibility to demonstrate, with affirmative evidence, that teacher education makes a difference in PreK–12 student learning. Program faculty need good data to make decisions about the progress of students, whom to recommend for state licensure, and how to improve teacher education. This article describes an American Psychological Association task force report that discusses 3 measures of p…

  • Testing and Assessment in Cross‐Cultural Psychology

    Open Access•Kurt F Geisinger, Carina McCormick•OTHER•Handbook of Psychology, Second…•2012

This chapter presents measurement issues of concern related to the use of assessments in cross-cultural psychology. These topics include an overview of some of the measurement issues, validity concerns, the process of adapting measures from one culture to another, and building measures from the start so that they can be used in several cultures. Kurt F Geisinger•ARTICLE•Psychological Assessment•1994

This article describes some of the issues affecting measures that are translated and/or adapted from an original language and culture to a new one. It addresses steps to ensure (a) that the test continues to measure the same psychological characteristics, (b) that the test content is the same, and (c) that the research procedures needed to document that it effectively meets this goal are available. Specifically, the notions of test validation, fa…

    Open Access•Jean P Kirnan, Kurt F Geisinger•ARTICLE•Educational and Psychological…•1981

Traditional graduate school admissons indices (three GRE tests, MATs, and GPAs) were used to predict performance on a screening examination called the Master's Comprehensive. The 114 students admitted between 1974 and 1978 were grouped by both year of entrance and doctoral program (clinical or experimental psychology). With respect to the five predictors, no mean differences were found relating to year of entrance, however, the results yielded si…

  • A Construct Validation of Faculty Orientations Toward Grading: Comparative Data From Three Institutions

    Open Access•Kurt F Geisinger, Amos N Wilson et al.•ARTICLE•Educational and Psychological…•1980

This investigation added to the construct validation of four faculty attitudes about grading. Three of these attitudes followed Thorndike's (1969) theory of grading and represented separate orientations toward grading: the criterion-referenced, the norm-referenced, and the self-referenced attitudes. The fourth attitude was concerned with an overall evaluation of the usefulness and value of grading (positive vs. negative). Faculty members from thr…
