Abordagem CTS diante das interpelações do sentido de interseccionalidade entre raça e gênero: Enfrentando o currículo no Ensino de Química
This text is an article made by many hands, as it was written from an optional subject in the Postgraduate Program in Natural Sciences Teaching at the Federal Fluminense University whose objective was to understand how the concept of intersectionality can be thought of in the field of science teaching. Thus, based on the intersectionality between race and gender, we question the practices and scientific knowledge named and interpreted by the CTS …
Towards the Public: A contribution of Public Archaeology at Serra do Carvalho, Póvoa do Lanhoso (North of Portugal)
The following article aims to present the results of the valorization of two under tumuli monuments that are part of the Serra do Carvalho necropolis in Póvoa do Lanhoso. The work involved about a dozen volunteers, mainly inhabitants from the Póvoa do Lanhoso municipality, and consisted in the removal of the vegetation mantle, cutting trees rooted on top of the mounds and graphical recording of the archaeological structures. In addition to a deta…
Syndemic conditions and medication adherence in older men living with HIV who have sex with men
0001). Past physical or sexual abuse, IPV, and binge drinking were not significantly associated with decreased medication adherence. The findings suggest that syndemic conditions may impact medication adherence in older MSM living with HIV
Intercomparison of 14 C Analysis of Carbonaceous Aerosols: Exercise 2009
Radiocarbon analysis of the carbonaceous aerosol allows an apportionment of fossil and non-fossil sources of airborne particulate matter (PM). A chemical separation of total carbon (TC) into its subtractions organic carbon (OC) and elemental carbon (EC) refines this powerful technique, as OC and EC originate from different sources and undergo different processes in the atmosphere. Although 14 C analysis of TC, EC, and OC has recently gained incre…
AMS 14 C Sample Preparation at the KCCAMS/UCI Facility: Status Report and Performance of Small Samples
We present an overview of accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) radiocarbon sample preparation and measurements, describing the technical upgrades that now allow us to routinely obtain 0.2–0.3% precision for 1-mg carbon samples. A precision of ∼1% on samples with 100 μg of carbon can also be achieved. We have also developed graphitization techniques and AMS procedures for ultra-small samples (down to 0.002 mg of carbon). Detailed time series are pr…
Magnesium Perchlorate as an Alternative Water Trap in AMS Graphite Sample Preparation: A Report On Sample Preparation at Kccams at the University of California, Irvine
We present a brief discussion of sample preparation procedures at the Keck Carbon Cycle Accelerator Mass Spectrometer (KCCAMS), University of California, Irvine, and a systematic investigation of the use of Mg(ClO 4 ) 2 as an absorptive water trap, replacing the standard dry ice/ethanol cold finger in graphite sample preparation. We compare high-precision AMS measurement results from oxalic acid I and USGS coal samples using Mg(ClO 4 ) 2 under di…
Ion Source Development at Kccams, University of California, Irvine
The Keck Carbon Cycle accelerator mass spectrometry facility at the University of California, Irvine, operates a National Electronics Corporation 40-sample MC-SNICS ion source. We describe modifications that have increased beam current output, improved reliability, and made the source easier to service
Development of a Robust 14 C Chronology for Lynch's Crater (North Queensland, Australia) Using Different Pretreatment Strategies
Lynch's Crater in northeastern Australia provides a long, continuous record of environmental change within the Late Quaternary. Here, we present newly determined radiocarbon ages, using acid-base-acid stepped combustion (ABA-SC) and acid-base-wet oxidation stepped combustion (ABOX-SC) pretreatment strategies. The new results largely confirm the original untreated radiocarbon results for the uppermost 9 m of sediments, (ca. 35 ka BP). Below this d…
Chronology of the Atmospheric Mercury in Lagoa da Pata Basin, Upper Rio Negro Region of Brazilian Amazon
We present prehistoric mercury accumulation rates in a dated sediment core from Lagoa da Pata, a remote lake in São Gabriel da Cachoeira, northern Amazon. The sediment samples were subdivided for mercury and radiocarbon analyses. A group of 18 samples have been prepared at ANU for 14 C dating by accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS). The dating results show a good correlation with depth in the core, down to 41,500 BP. Three distinct sections are cl…
Radiocarbon Dating of Wood Using Different Pretreatment Procedures: Application to the Chronology of Rotoehu Ash, New Zealand
We compare radiocarbon accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) ages of wood samples subjected to a conventional acid-base-acid pretreatment with stepped combustion (ABA-SC) with results from the same samples subjected to an acid-base-wet oxidation pretreatment with stepped combustion (ABOX-SC) and cellulose extraction with stepped combustion (CE-SC). The ABOX-SC procedure has been shown previously to lead to lower backgrounds for old charcoal samples…
