Exploring Wildfire Preparedness, Perceptions, and Responses in Western Canada: Insights from Valemount, British Columbia
Climate change and decades of fire suppression are increasing the risk of wildfire in many rural and remote communities across Canada. Yet limited research has been done to better understand how these communities experience wildfire risk. For this research, conducted prior to the catastrophic wildfire season of 2023 in British Columbia, we interviewed 20 key informants living in the village of Valemount in the Robson Valley, British Columbia, abo…
Comparing Companion Involvement in Clinical Telephone and Face-To-Face Consultations About Seizures
Companions (i.e., friends, family members, and other accompanying persons) play an important role in seizure clinic consultations, providing information that patients cannot. The COVID-19 pandemic has seen an increase in these consultations being conducted via telephone. Little is known, however, about how this shift might affect companion participation. Using conversation analysis applied to a set of recorded telephone neurologist-patient-compan…

Community Adaptations to Create “Inside and Outside” Cultural Spaces: The Case of Dukuh Traditional Village in Indonesia
Community adaptation is a way for a community or a community group to agree on its cultural space so that people's lives run harmoniously and prosperously. Adaptation is interrelated with how people respond to their environment, customs, and various external influences. This is also the case with the people of Dukuh Traditional Village, in Indonesia. This village is close to the forest. In addition, customs with religious rituals make the Dukuh T…

Use of the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) in Practice: Interactions between patients and physicians
We analyze the use of nine-item Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9), an instrument that is widely used in diagnosing and determining the severity of depression. Using conversation analysis, we show how the doctor deploys the PHQ-9 in response to the patient's doubts about whether she is depressed. Rather than relaying the PHQ-9 verbatim, the doctor deviates from the wording so that the response options are selectively offered to upgrade the seve…

How is adaptation, resilience, and vulnerability research engaging with gender
The gendered dimensions of climate change have received increasing interest in climate change adaptation, resilience, and vulnerability (ARV) research. Yet concerns have been expressed that engagement with ‘gender’ in this work has been tokenistic. In this context, we ask: how is climate change ARV research engaging with gender? To answer this question, we develop an assessment framework capturing key attributes of engagement and use it to evalua…
Sorokin and Civilization: A Centennial Assessment
and Civilization is a festschrift to Pitirim Sorokin, one of the most famed figures of twentieth-century sociology and first president of the International Society for the Comparative Study of Civilizations (ISCSC). He was a giant of the twentieth-century stage in the larger world as well. He debated with Trotsky, exchanged ideas with Pavlov, and received a personal invitation to meet with President Masaryk of Czechoslovakia. His principled disse…
Low-Income Households and Credit: Exclusion, Preference, and Inclusion
In this paper it is suggested that current debates on financial exclusion are often too narrowly drawn and institutionally focused. As a consequence, less recognition is given to the availability and use of other regulated financial services such as mail order and moneylending. Drawing on data from a number of recent studies, the authors explore the structures and processes involved in the provision and use of these additional credit sources and …
The New Homeownership: The Impact of Labour Market Developments on Attitudes toward Owning Your Own Home
During the postwar period as a whole homeownership in Britain has been generally considered to be a desirable form of tenure. For many observers the present, since 1989, downturn in the market-characterised by high levels of arrears, stagnant or falling prices, negative equity, and so on-is a temporary blip from which sooner or later the enthusiasm for owning will recover. In the first part of this paper we analyse the British Social Attitudes Su…
Part-time work and full-time higher education
This paper reports the results of a random sample survey of term-time employment amongst full-time undergraduates in four institutions. There is a belief that the incidence of employment is increasing, with detrimental effects for academic performance, but the supporting evidence is typically drawn from studies of specific institutions and/or specific groups of students. This paper offers a more widely-based estimate of the incidence of employmen…
