The Impact of Restrictive Legislation on Gender-Affirming Care Providers in the United States
Introduction The wave of legislative restrictions on gender-affirming care for youth in the United States has placed considerable strain on healthcare providers, intensifying emotional labor and increasing risks of occupational distress. This study explored professional quality of life among gender-affirming care providers, with a focus on differences based on state-level legislative restrictions and clinician identity. Methods This cross-section…
Prohibiting Harmful Practices Against LGBTQIA+ Individuals and Students in Field Placement
Field practicum is known as the “signature pedagogy” for social work. Though the Council of Social Work Education’s accreditation standards guide the placement processes, research on the experiences of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, asexual, and other sexual and gender minorities (LGBTQIA+) students shows that this population continues to face discrimination in practicum placements. In this point-of-view article, we present…
Racial Equity in Social Work Education
The 2022 Education Policy and Accreditation Standards emphasize antiracism, diversity, equity, and inclusion (ADEI) in social work curriculum. Social work programs across the nation are now tasked with addressing ADEI in both explicit and implicit curricula. This article aims to offer insights from a Race Equity Work Team (REWT) to enhance transparent conversations within the profession and support similar curriculum reviews. Using a collaborativ…
Grassroots Activism Impacting Rural LGBTQIA+ Communities
In 2022, the American Civil Liberties Union tracked over 200 anti-LGBTQIA+ bills in the legislative session. Policy protections for LGBTQIA+ people can only advance when large numbers of people push for change, which requires greater public awareness of the implicit and explicit barriers for LGBTQIA+ persons. One promising practice for increasing visibility and public awareness is through grassroots activism. Grassroots work spans micro, mezzo, a…
Multiple risk factors of substance use among lesbian, gay, bisexual (LGB) adults
The aim of this study was to identify and compare risk factors of substance use between heterosexual and LGB adults. Using data from the 2020 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), Chi-square, t-test, and standard multiple regressions were employed to analyze the data. The findings showed that LGB participants had significantly higher experiences with substances and initiated substance use earlier than heterosexual participants. Some ris…
Ethics and LGBTQIA+ Student Rights in Religious Institutions
On March 29, 2021, the Religious Exemption Accountability Project filed a class-action lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Education on behalf of 33 sexual and gender minority students who reported discrimination at institutions that have a Title IX religious’ exemption. Of the 25 institutions named in the suit, 14 have accredited social work programs. This litigation highlights the importance of a professional discussion about implicit curric…
Faithful foundations
Research has presented a dual-sided reality of the positive and negative influences of religion in the lives of transgender and gender expansive (TGE) individuals. This qualitative study utilises a phenomenological approach to explore how positive experiences in faith communities impact TGE individuals. Using inductive, thematic analysis of interviews with nine TGE participants, we look at why participants entered into faith communities and what …
Teaching Note—Considering Competencies for Social Work Practice and Research With Transgender and Gender Diverse Individuals
This article presents current research on clinical practice with transgender and gender diverse (TGD) persons and introduces clinical social work educators and researchers with TGD-specific counseling competencies from the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH) and the Association for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Issues in Counseling (ALGBTIC). The article will align these practice competencies with existing soci…
Christian Mindfulness and Mental Health
Mindfulness is increasingly implemented as a tool in mental health practice for coping and self-care. Some Christians worry that these practices might be in conflict with their own tradition, while other Christian contexts are reclaiming the contemplative aspects of the faith. Though clinicians are not trained to teach on religious topics and ethically must avoid pushing religion onto clients, conceptualization and research extend the benefits of…
A case study in group spiritual care for residents of a post-acute care facility
The population of the United States increasingly identifies as not religious or as spiritual but not religious. Though this cultural shift is more noticeable among younger generations, there is growing evidence that generalized spiritual care activities are needed in post-acute care facilities. This paper presents a case study of an eight-week “Spirituality and Life” discussion group that was developed to address such a gap in spiritual supports.…

LGBTQI+ and Christian? Who decides
Interviews with 20 adults who self-identified as both Christian and LGBTQI+ were examined for themes of identity and Christian history, affiliation, and vocation. Considered in the context of denominational and congregational struggles over scripture, policy, and decisions with respect to inclusion, leadership, and same sex marriage, these 20 participants have traditional histories and often non-traditional pathways to faith and service. The foll…
