Objective. Maternity waiting homes (MWHs) are residential facilities where pregnant women live during the last few weeks of their gestation and can easily be transported to a hospital equipped to provide obstetric emergency care or skilled birth attendance. Open Access•Anthony Marks•ARTICLE•Medical Anthropology Quarterly•2026•References: 28

This article examines the experiences of Brazilian women as they navigate digital abortion‐aid spaces. • Introduction: A Personal Trip into Arabian Prehistory: Past, Present and Future

    Open Access•Anthony E Marks, Anthony Marks•ARTICLE•Paléorient•2023•References: 16

The path I have taken toward Arabian prehistory has been long and circuitous. Having been in the field in Iran and Israel, while an undergraduate in the 1950s, my attention when I got my PhD was focused on the Levant. Consequently, my first step toward Arabian prehistory was both unintentional and unlikely. In the fall of 1960, while a first-year graduate student at Columbia University, my mentor Ralph Solecki asked whether I wanted to go into th…

    Open Access•Anthony Marks, Alejandra Marks•ARTICLE•Men and Masculinities•2022•References: 17

For fifty years, first-trimester abortion has been steadily available, legal, safe, and cost-free in Cuba. But in the context of enduring gender disparity, societal attitudes surrounding the procedure vary widely. Women's often-recurring use of abortion evokes sexual emancipation for some, while others see abortion as a wound that men inflict on women. Men and women express a variety of emotional and practical concerns that highlight the complexi…

  • Tool Standardization in the Middle and Upper Palaeolithic: A Closer Look (with comments)

    Open Access•Anthony E Marks, Anthony Marks et al.•ARTICLE•Cambridge Archaeological Journal•2001•Cited by: 24

It has been postulated that one difference between Neanderthals and anatomically modern people lies in a ‘clearer mental template’ of flaked stone tools on the part of modern people. This is thought to have been manifested in greater tool standardization during the Upper Palaeolithic than in the Middle Palaeolithic. Testing of this hypothesis, using three samples of a characteristic Upper Palaeolithic tool class — burins — from one Middle Palaeol…
