  • Two German Perspectives on a German Discussion

    Open Access•Wolf Gruner, Stefanie Schüler-Springorum•ARTICLE•Central European History•2023

This contribution results from a place of serious discomfort regarding recent public and academic discussions in Germany, where Holocaust memory and its political instrumentalization have seemed to produce a growing dogmatism, harming academic freedom. Because we both direct university research centers in Berlin and Los Angeles dedicated to the study of the Holocaust, we have decided to join forces and share our particular German perspectives on …

  • Maurice Samuels. The Right to Difference

    Open Access•Stefanie Schüler-Springorum•ARTICLE•The American Historical Review•2018

This book hits home—if by “home” we mean the core of our actual debates on multiculturalism and identity politics, on equality and justice in a globalizing world. And the first surprise it entails for the reader is the proof that these debates are hardly as new as many columnists would like to have it, and that its combat lines have never been as clear-cut as their contemporary interpretations seem to imply. Very conscious about this highly polit…

  • Gender and the Politics of Anti-Semitism

    Open Access•Stefanie Schüler-Springorum•ARTICLE•The American Historical Review•2018

This contribution focuses on the development of gendered anti-Semitic stereotypes based on material drawn from post-Enlightenment Germany, exploring their ambivalent messages and meanings. It shows that this development was intimately connected with the creation of bourgeois gender roles and images of sexuality that were adapted by middle-class Jewish men and women even as they were used to denigrate them. By ascribing "femininity" to Jewish men …

    Uffa Jensen, Stefanie Schüler-Springorum•ARTICLE•Geschichte und Gesellschaft•2013•Cited by: 4•References: 3

Historians and social scientists have rarely investigated modern anti-Semitism as an emotional phenomenon. The authors argue that the current conceptual weaknesses of research on anti-Semitism can be overcome by reflecting on its affective dimensions. They offer a detailed critique of the most influential approaches within the historical literature, especially the social psychology of prejudice. By proposing a strictly historical understanding of…

Steven Lowen…

  • Home/Front

    Karen Hagemann, Stefanie Schüler-Springorum•EDITOR•BOOK•Home/Front•2002

We are all acutely aware of the devastation and upheaval that result from war. Less obvious is the extent to which the military and war impact on the gender order. This book is the first to explore the intersections of the military, war and gender in twentieth-century Germany from a variety of different perspectives. Its authors investigate the relevance of the military and war for the formation of gender relations and their representation as wel…
