  • The morpho-syntax of Standard Scottish English: Questionnaire-based insights

    Open Access•Ole Schützler, Lukas Sönning et al.•ARTICLE•English World-Wide A Journal of…•2026

With empirical research on Standard Scottish English showing a bias towards phonology, the aim of the current study is to contribute to the morpho-syntactic documentation of this variety. Relying on Standard Southern British English for comparison, we concentrate on four eWAVE features on which the varieties have been noted to diverge: (i) youse as a second person plural pronoun, (ii) extended uses of the progressive, (iii) epistemic mustn’t , an…

  • Sensitivity of dispersion measures to distributional patterns and corpus design

Open Access•Lukas Sönning, Jamie Egbert•ARTICLE•International Journal of Corpus…•2026

Recent work has shown that dispersion measures respond to multiple features in the data: Juilland’s D varies systematically with the number of corpus parts, and all commonly used indices are affected by the frequency of an item. This study uses a simulation approach to provide further insights into the sensitivity of dispersion measures to differences in corpus design (number of texts, average text length, distribution of text lengths) and distri…

  • Down-sampling from hierarchically structured corpus data

    Open Access•Lukas Sönning•ARTICLE•International Journal of Corpus…•2024•References: 1

Resource constraints often force researchers to downsize the list of tokens returned by a corpus query. This paper sketches a methodology for down-sampling and offers a survey of current practices. We build on earlier work and extend the evaluation of down-sampling designs to settings where tokens are clustered by text file and lexeme. Our case study deals with third-person present-tense verb inflection in Early Modern English and focuses on five…
