    Xiaolu Lei, John S Strau et al.•ARTICLE•China Economic Journal•2015•Cited by: 16•References: 4

Declining fertility in China has raised concerns about elderly support, especially when public support is inadequate. Using rich information from the nationally representative China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) baseline survey, we describe the patterns of current living arrangements of the Chinese elderly and investigate their determinants and correlation with intergenerational transfers. We find that roughly 41% of Chinese a…

Modeled after the American Health and Retirement Survey (HRS), the CHARLS Pilot survey respondents are 45 years and older in two quite distinct provinces-Zhejiang, a high growth industrialized province on the East Coast and Gansu, a largely agricultural and poor p…

This report based on research interviews conducted with persons struggling to recover from prolonged psychiatric disorders suggests that the rediscovery and reconstruction of an enduring sense of the self as an active and responsible agent provides an important aspect of improvement. This process of developing a functional sense of self in the midst of persisting psychotic symptoms and dysfunction is described, and its implications for understand…

  • How Does Mother's Education Affect Child Height?

Duncan Thomas, John S Strau et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Human Resources•1991

Many studies have demonstrated that parental education has a significant positive impact on child health. This paper attempts to identify the mechanisms through which maternal education affects one indicator of child health-height conditional on age and sex. Using data from the 1986 Brazilian Demographic and Health Survey, it is shown that almost all the impact of maternal education can be explained by indicators of access to information-reading …

  • Child survival, height for age and household characteristics in Brazil

    Open Access•Duncan Thomas, John S Strau et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Development Economics•1990•Cited by: 37•References: 1

The impact of household characteristics on child survival and height, conditional on age, is examined using household survey data from Brazil. Parental education is found to have a very strong positive effect on both outcomes and this is robust to the inclusion of household income and also parental heights, which partly proxy for unobserved family background characteristics. We find that income effects are significant and positive for child survi…

  • Does Better Nutrition Raise Farm Productivity

John S Strau, John Strauss•ARTICLE•Journal of Political Economy•1986•Cited by: 41

Household-level data from Sierra Leone are used to test whether higher caloric intake enhances family farm labor productivity. This is the notion behind the efficiency wages hypothesis, which has found only weak empirical support. A farm production function is estimated, accounting for the simultaneity in input and calorie choice. Instruments include prices, household demographic characteristics, and farm assets. The latter two sets of instrument…
