Othered Emotions in Participatory Design
Mapping spontaneous conflicts
Introduction
This special issue focuses on how designing consciously with the past can play a pivotal role in repoliticizing notions of time in design research. The articles gathered here further discussions on the critical potential of addressing the past in Design Issues. They challenge ideas of being out of time—not only in an ecological sense and because of broken worldly relations but also on an institutional level when tight timelines tied to funding me…
Reworlding
This forum showcases emerging approaches, new ideas, and promising pathways that draw attention to the diverse, interdisciplinary, and impactful work of global scholars to advance dialogue in the field on how we can best contribute to climate action. --- Robert Soden, Vishal Sharma, Matthew Louis Mauriello, and Nicola J. Bidwell, Editors
Self-Organized Social and Physical Livelihood Assets in State-Driven Urban Developments
In Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, local actors through self-organized practices that contribute to livelihoods generate the lived space amidst top-down processes in commercial streets. We employed a design anthropological approach in studying how inhabitants create, use and thrive in these spaces. We analyze and discuss the social and physical assets of commercial streets in the context of planned neighborhoods that are governed by regulations. We reve…
Co-Designing Multispecies Speculations Through Biofuturing
Amid growing environmental concerns, there is an increasing demand for creative research approaches that address impending crises while simultaneously imagining sustainable modes for humans to coexist with nature. In response, we introduce the concept/practice of "biofuturing," a creative research approach concerned with the co-design of multispecies speculations of worlds to come. We engaged 21 scholars in a 3-day biofuturing event, combining a …

This handbook offers a comprehensive overview of key themes and agendas in contemporary Participatory Design across diverse disciplines, continents, communities, and practices. Building on Participatory Design’s core values of empowerment and democracy, the handbook explores how the field is developing and diversifying to address contemporary societal challenges in a global community. Experiential Evaluation to Create Risky Situations and Address Tensions in a Participatory Planning Process
Planning processes often cause tensions between institutions and citizens because the local knowledge and values of the citizens are not included in the decision-making process, which can cause mistrust. This article builds on an ongoing PhD research that explores the potential of experiential evaluation as an alternative and experimental approach to “hybrid forums”: an approach to open the participatory planning process for diverse actors and va…
Hypervernacular Design
Contemporary design discourse needs words to discuss its role in everyday life. Therefore, this article rethinks the meaning and value of the term “vernacular design” in contemporary society, with a focus on vernacular graphic design. We argue that the domain needs an interpretation that is more attuned to novel approaches around hybridity and plurality in design. We frame this development from a theoretical perspective by introducing the concept…

Participation, for Whom? The Potential of Gamified Participatory Artefacts in Uncovering Power Relations within Urban Renewal Projects
When defining participation in urban renewal projects in a political sense, this concept implies the challenging of power relations in each of its dimensions while addressing the need for knowledge, action and consciousness. Knowledge is defined as a resource which affects observable decision making. Action looks at who is involved in the production of such knowledge in order to challenge and shape the political agenda. Consciousness is how the p…
Dialectical Design Dialogues
This article explores ‘dialectical design dialogues’ as an approach to engage with ethics in everyday urban planning contexts. It starts from Paulo Freire’s pedagogical view (1970/2017), in which dialogues imply the establishment of a horizontal relation between professionals and amateurs, in order to understand, question and imagine things in everyday reality, in this case, urban transformations, applied to participatory planning and enriched th…
