Collective memory of violence of the female brown body
Feminists have consistently engaged with ontological and epistemological issues about what counts as knowledge, based on whose worldview, and what knowledge and worldviews remain unrecognised or ignored. Utilising Mexicana and Chicana fictional and conceptual writings and public art installations on the Juárez feminicides, the article focuses on the ontological, epistemological and pedagogical significance of collective memory. From the mid-twent…
Discourses of legitimation and loss of sons who stay behind
The increased exodus of more than one million Ecuadorians in the last decade means greater numbers of families and parents are separated from their loved ones and children. From oral life history interviews with sons, the authors address research on children who stay behind by focusing on the discourse of legitimation that sons of migrant Ecuadorian parents residing in Spain internalize and/or challenge. Utilizing critical discourse analysis (CDA…
Chicana/Latin American Feminist Epistemologies of the Global South (Within and Outside the North)
Our current global/local state requires a move beyond ideological geographic territorialities of North and South to combat imperialist White supremacist capitalist patriarchy (hooks, 2013) and create global alliances. A survey of decolonial Latin American and Chicana feminist works emphasize an array of issues and concepts of which two are discussed in this article. The focus on epistemologies of the South (within and outside the North) and globa…
Chicana Transborder Vivencias and Autoherteorías
In this self-reflexive piece, the author shares vivencias (lived realities) of growing up transborderly between the United States and Mexico and invokes that history and experience in the crafting of theories from the field. Her narrative reveals three autoherteorías of transborder existence and research: new tribalism, convivencia (coexistence), and supervivencia (survivance). In the tradition of Anzaldúa's work, the author finds new tribalism s…
Calming the spirit and ensuring super-vivencia
The changing social, cultural and economic conditions of transmigrant communities in rural Mexico require that women who stay behind, while their loved ones travel back and forth to the USA, create social relations that ensure their survival. From over five years of ethnographic research, this article explores the healing potential of women-centred teaching and learning spaces. By juxtaposing Ortega y Gasset's notion of vivencia – to live – with …

Global Restructuring, Transmigration and Mexican Rural Women Who Stay Behind
In a time when globalization has escalated the migration of groups of people there is still little known of the families and communities that stay behind. Based on over five years of ethnographic research with campesinas (rural Mexican women) in a highly migratory part of Central Mexico, this article examines the manner in which campesinas who stay behind as their husbands migrate are implicated in global processes. As a result of the movement of…
Campesina Epistemologies and Pedagogies of the Spirit
Transnational Communities En La Lucha
Existing debates surrounding the effects of globalization on historically disenfranchised peoples, such as rural communities, have traditionally ignored grassroots organizations efforts to "globalize from below." Expanding on Appadurai's (2000) notion of globalization from below, this article examines the knowledge creation and social action of rural Mexican women (campesinas), who affected by the transnational migration of loved ones, are active…
Portraits of Mujeres Desjuiciadas
In this article, Ruth Trinidad Galvan describes her ethnographic study with rural women and their communities in Central Mexico, as well as her affiliation with a grassroots popular education organization. The organizing mechanism of the small savings groups and the women's work and participation in them inspired a reconceptualization of ''pedagogy'' situated in the multiple subject positions and conditions of campesinas. The reconceptualization …
