Mandating Black Studies Curricula
In this qualitative study, we examined how participation in the California Black Studies Curriculum (CABSC) Project shaped the skills, practices, and mindsets of its participants. We used LaGarrett King’s Black Historical Consciousness as a conceptual framework to analyze data. We found that participants defined Black Studies both as a community-oriented field of study and as a subject area that reflects and represents the full spectrum of Black …

Research on Teachers of Color and Indigenous Teachers
This special issue expands upon the Handbook of Research on Teachers of Color and Indigenous Teachers (Gist & Bristol, 2022a) and the practitioner-focused Phi Delta Kappan special issue, “Learning from the Voices of Black, Indigenous and People of Color Educators: Charting New Directions for Research, Policy, and Practice” (Gist & Bristol, 2021). The co-created articles in this special issue highlight the combined expertise of policy makers and e…
Getting Black Men to the Blackboard
Despite existing recruitment and retention efforts, there has been a persistent underrepresentation of Black men teachers in the U.S. educator workforce. The present study employed a phenomenological approach to examine what motivated Black men (n = 27) to enter the teaching profession. We drew on the social-cognitive career theory (SCCT) framework to analyze the most salient factors that Black men teachers referenced in their career decision-mak…
Mixed Messages and Diversity Management
Purpose: As senior district leaders in US public schools make public statements about the importance of teachers of color for all students, their inaction in designing policies to recruit these educators can undermine diversity progress. This study explores the mixed messaging around one small urban district’s effort to increase the ethnoracial diversity of its teacher workforce in response to its increasingly diverse student body. Research Metho…
Teachers of Color & Self-Efficacy in Social and Emotional Learning (SEL)
This article examines teacher self-efficacy in social and emotional learning (SEL), particularly by teachers of color, and the conditions that shaped their efficacy beliefs. Data are drawn from surveys with two teacher groups, one comprised of teachers of color and a comparative group that was predominantly white. Surveys were followed by interviews and observations with teachers in each group. Findings showed that teachers of color reported stro…

A Tale of Two Types of Schools
Context Ongoing teacher diversity campaigns will not increase the net number of teachers of color if policymakers fail to address the disproportionate rate at which teachers of color leave the profession when compared to White teachers. Purpose The purpose of this article is to fill the empirical gap about the mechanisms that influence Black male teacher turnover. Specifically, this study explores the perceived school-based experiences of Black m…
Curricular Contradictions
In this article, Travis J. Bristol and Joy Esboldt examine the supports and constraints teachers at one midsized urban school serving predominately Latinx students encountered during school-based professional development aligned with becoming a National Board Certified Teacher (NBCT). Research has established that Black and Latinx students have less access to NBCTs when compared to White students, yet few studies offer insight into the organizati…
Black men teaching
While there continues to be increasing research about Black male teachers’ school-based experiences, there is less empirical evidence on the variation in these experiences for this subgroup. Drawing on Kanter’s Theory of Numbers and Group Composition, the researcher used the qualitative method to compare the perceptions of Black male teachers in schools that employ just one Black male teacher versus schools with larger numbers of Black male teach…
Male teachers of color
The manuscripts in this special issue chart a new landscape for educational research on male teachers of color. The contributors examine the lived complexities subsumed under the umbrella of ‘male teachers of color,’ and place research on distinct groups of male teachers of color in conversation with one another. The manuscripts in this special issue reflect the diversity and possibility of critical research in education, with an emphasis on the ex…
Supporting Black Male Preservice Teachers
Drawing on semistructured interviews with 20 Black male preservice teachers, this article examines one alternative teacher certification program’s attempt to support these aspiring educators through an affinity group. Although a growing body of research highlights the challenges preservice Black teachers experience in their preparation programs, there is less research about how preparation programs create supportive environments for aspiring Blac…
The Added Value of Latinx and Black Teachers for Latinx and Black Students
A research synthesis points to the added value —benefits to social and emotional development, as well as learning outcomes—for students of color taught by teachers of color. Given ongoing education debates, policymakers can use this evidence base to craft legislation aimed at increasing the ethnoracial diversity of the U.S. educator workforce. To begin, historical research shows how Latinx and Black teachers have supported their Latinx and Black …
Who Is Here to Help Me? The Work-Related Social Networks of Staff of Color in Two Mid-Sized Districts
Despite the benefits of educators of color to various outcomes for students of color, large-scale research has not explored these educators’ on-the-job interactions with colleagues outside of large urban districts. Using social network analysis, this study examined the work-related social interactions of staff (teachers and administrators) of color in two mid-sized school districts. Where staff of color were likely the only faculty members of col…
Exploring the Boundary-Heightening Experiences of Black Male Teachers
This article uses a phenomenological approach to explore the organizational dynamic of boundary heightening for 27 Black male teachers, across 14 schools, in one urban school district. Black male teachers described being perceived by their colleagues as either incompetent or overqualified to teach their subject matter. These experiences created workplace environments in which participants felt alienated from their colleagues. In response, these B…
Exploring the transition experiences of one black male refugee pre-service teacher at a HBCU
Purpose There is limited discussion in the teacher education literature about the experiences of pre-service black male teachers generally and the ethnic diversity among black male pre-service teachers specifically. Thus, this paper aims to explore the experiences of Frank, a black male refugee health education major attending an historically black college and university (HBCU). Design/methodology/approach This research study is theoretically gui…
