  • Mom Just Forgot Me at a Gas Station”: A Qualitative Study of Parental ADHD in the Home

    Open Access•Hailey M Alvey, Andrew S Walters et al.•ARTICLE•Contemporary Family Therapy•2024•References: 7

Existing literature suggests that the symptomatology for adults with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) may have serious implications for parenting behavior. Although presentation of symptoms for adults with ADHD may negatively impact ability to successfully and confidently fulfill parenting responsibilities (e.g., involvement and responsiveness, timeliness, organization, routine), far less is known about how the disorder affects chi…

The Storytelling for Empowerment (SFE) HIV StoryBook was designed with an innovative ecodevelopment approach combining empowerment, family communication, and positive cultural identity. A mixed method design used both a randomized control group design, as well as grounded theory coding of semi-structured focus gr…

  • Avenue T: Using film as entrée in teaching about transgender

    Andrew S Walters, Kae Rehma•ARTICLE•Sex Education•2013

Educators from a variety of disciplines include the concept of transgender and multiple gender identities in course curricula. The ‘T’ (denoting the specific inclusion of transgender) in the popular acronym LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) often is given less pedagogical attention than is sexual orientation, and the transgender concept often is taught in the context of sexual orientation. An experimental study was conducted to determine…

    Terri D Fisher, Andrew S Walters•ARTICLE•Psychology of Men & Masculinity•2003•Cited by: 4•References: 11

Variables in addition to gender that might be related to perceptions of sexual intent were examined. College students reported the degree to which they thought characters in various interpersonal situations were indicating sexual interest and completed measures of attitudes toward women, sexual experience, number of sexual partners, hypermasculinity or hyperfemininity, and social desirability responding. Small but significant gender differences w…

  • Attention All Shoppers, Queer Customers in Aisle Two: Investigating Lesbian and Gay Discrimination in the Marketplace

    Andrew S Walters, Lisa Jean Moore•ARTICLE•Consumption Markets & Culture•2002•Cited by: 5•References: 43

In this paper, drawing on epistemologies in social and behavioral sciences, we discuss the tenuous social-cultural climate of sexual minorities within markets. Discourses across disciplines address the socio-political and cultural evolution of sexual minorities, most notably self-identified and out lesbians and gay men. Yet, consumptive and marketing spheres offer mixed metaphors about the value and desirability of lesbians and gays, and often wo…

  • Homophobia Within Schools: Challenging the Culturally Sanctioned Dismissal of Gay Students and Colleagues

    Andrew S Walters, David M Hayes•ARTICLE•Journal of Homosexuality•1998•Cited by: 12•References: 49

In this paper we chronicle the prevalence of and cultural prescription for homophobia in the United States. The endemic nature of homophobia as it has been studied by behavioral scientists is reviewed. We then suggest that as social institutions reflecting cultural values, schools, colleges, and universities sanction an environment that neglects the value of gay students, staff, and faculty. Institutional homophobia dismisses the legitimacy of th…

  • Perceived impact of limb amputation on sexual activity: A study of adult amputees

    Gail M Williamson, Andrew S Walters•ARTICLE•The Journal of Sex Research•1996•Cited by: 2•References: 4

Although research amply indicates that limb amputation poses serious threats to psychological well‐being, little is known about the role of sexual activity in this process. In this study of 76 amputees, three fourths of the participants reported that amputation had restricted their sexual activities to some extent. Among the variables predicting more negative impact on sexual activity were older age, being unmarried, and greater feelings of amput…

    Andrew S Walters, Maria-Cristina Curran•ARTICLE•Journal of Homosexuality•1996•Cited by: 9

An experimental field study was conducted to investigate differential treatment of same-sex versus opposite-sex couples. Over a period of four months, three couples (1 female-female, 1 male-female, 1 male-male) entered each of twenty retail stores. All couples were trained confederates. Multiple measures unequivocally showed differential treatment for heterosexual and homosexual couples. Heterosexual couples were assisted by staff in significantl…
