Who Are Gun Owners in the United States? A Latent Class Analysis of the 2019 National Lawful Use of Guns Survey
We used data from the 2019 National Lawful Use of Guns Survey to segment the gun-owning population into different subcultural categories. Performing a latent class analysis, we introduce six types of indicators: (1) the types of firearm owned, (2) the reported primary reason for owning a firearm, (3) involvement in various gun-related activities, (4) Second Amendment activism, (5) the extent to which those in one's social network own guns, and (6…
The Beijing Olympics: Promoting China
Post-Beijing 2008 and Confucian Outreach in a New Game: China's Next Move
After the spectacle of Beijing 2008, China's domestic prestige has been both enhanced and rigorously called into question. Its international position has likewise been both self-evidently improved and critically (some would say ‘aggressively’) examined. Any amount of critical distance in assessment forces us to recognize the real improvements China has made that have been illuminated via the Games, right alongside the serious challenges the count…
The Beijing Olympics as Indicator of a Chinese Competitive Ethic
Before the nation-form paradigm of political realism most commonly associated with Western inter-state politics came to dominate China, its imperial logic of external state interaction was traditionally organized by a cosmological-political ordering of tribute relationships that we might want to call ‘soft power with Chinese characteristics’. One of the ways in which outside influences have been made local in China in recent decades was the incre…
Olympian Ghosts: Apprehensions and Apparitions of the Beijing Spectacle
Choosing not to follow the more popular approach of addressing the Beijing Olympics by critical attention to the political, economic, historical or even ideological meaning of the Olympics to China, this article situates the 2008 Beijing Olympics in the fragmentary everyday life of contemporary Chinese people. The grand spectacle of the Olympics is dissolved into the rumours and stories which reveal the deep sense of fear, anxiety, ungroundedness…
Prologue: Beijing 2008 – A Production on Many Levels
Epilogue: Approaches to a Productive Spectacle
Epilogue: Sideshow Beijing 2008: An Absence of Euphoria beyond the Southern Clouds
This analysis investigates an example of internal dissent regarding the assumed positive qualities of having the Olympics awarded to Beijing. The observations herein are located in the frontier and marginal points of view, being vantages with a historical depth of alternative understanding newly re-energized by the inherent divisiveness generated by China's recent neoliberal transformation. The sentiments of disagreement observed are excavated fo…
Olympian Politics in Beijing: Games but not Just Games
This article discusses how the Olympics serve as a meaningfully political act at least as much as a sporting event, with China's ambitions to dominate the 2008 games something of a political analogy for the logic of its greater ambitions in Asia and the world. Seeing the spectacle as politics by other means, this analysis takes up the example of how the 2008 Beijing games are the latest leg of an old project that has seen muscular Christian motiv…
Who "Who" is, and Other Local Poetics of National Policy: Yunnan Minzu Shibie and Hui in the Process
Starting with the observation that the 1954 minzu shibie Ethnic Categorization Project was part of a continuing process, this article addresses the suspicious finality implied in most narratives of minzu (nationality) formation. In arguing that the process continues, Hui communities of Yunnan serve as exemplars of the embodied life minzu shibie is leading today; i.e., as part of the ongoing process of culture. "Culture," conceived in part as a cu…
