Questioning colonia consolidation in a Mexican border city
This article examines two drags on organizing for self‐help community development in Agua Prieta, Sonora. The first is U.S.‐based, church‐led charity in two forms: “forays,” which bring outreach groups to disadvantaged barrios of the city for very brief periods; and more consistent charity provision via Evangelical Protestant churches. The second is the drug trade, which exacerbates a social climate of accumulation, competition, and personal enri…

The Topology of Autonomy
Policy debates are still too polarized between those who expect too much of 'indigenous autonomy' and those who expect too little. This article examines the local meaning of, and proposals toward, self-determination in a Totonac coffee-growing population in the Sierra Norte de Puebla, Mexico. The article argues for the complexity and context-dependency of 'autonomy'. Several factors shape visions of autonomy/self-determination in the Sierra. Firs…
The Black Self-Concept
To understand the Negro's self-image, self-concept, and who am I? problems we must go back to the time of birth and creation of the American Negro. Over 300 years ago Black men, women, and children were extracted from their native Africa, stripped bare both psychologically and physically, and placed in an alien white land.... the most tragic, yet predictable, part of all this is that the Negro has come to form his self-image and self-concept on t…

Black Studies
There is a tendency for many people, especially those in educational circles, to contemplate a definition of studies. When they cannot instantly generate a definition in their heads, they conclude that there is no such thing as studies. Ironically, most of the people in this category, supposedly well-educated, refuse to read, do research, or secure reference sources from the authorities in the field in order to acquire an answer. To say that blac…
Test Validity, Reliability
Opinion is split over whether lower scores by Blacks on traditional ability tests are attributed primarily to genetic heritage or to such environmental factors as discrimination, poor diet, bad living conditions, inferior schools or bias of intelligence tests. It is seriously questioned today whether traditional ability tests may serve as valid measures of Black intelligence. (emphasis mine) R. L. Williams, 1973

So-Called Possession in Pre-Christian Greece
In 1909 Julius Tambornino published what has remained the standard collection of material relevant to the belief in demonic possession in pagan and Christian antiquity.1 The views advanced by Tambornino have been generally accepted. As H. J. Rose puts it: That a human being might become possessed by a supernatural power was a fairly common ancient belief. The effect might be a prophetic frenzy, as in the case of the Pythia; such a person was EV0E…
