Using the Rose Angina Questionnaire cross-culturally
Existing versions of the RAQ are unlikely to be yielding data that are cross-culturally valid or comparable. For robust health survey research in languages other than that in which the questionnaire was developed, lay assessment of questionnaires prior to and after translation is a necessity rather than a luxury
Insights from Research on Cross-Cultural Validation of Health-Related Questionnaires
This article discusses the recruitment and training of bilingual project workers and their role in data gathering; the level of comprehension of the interviewees with regard to the nature of the task and its alien nature; the contribution of social customs and expectations; the vagaries of language; the researchers' level of comprehension of data collected across a range of languages; the feelings of loss of control by the researchers over the re…

The health effects of improvements to housing
Although housing conditions were an integral part of the emergence of the Public Health movement, there has been relatively little research on the relationship between housing and health compared to that on social inequalities in general. This is surprising in view of the fact that one of the major links between social inequalities and health is adverse housing conditions. Findings from previous investigations in several countries of the presence…
Housing conditions and mental health in a disadvantaged area in Scotland
OBJECTIVE: To examine the mental health impact of different aspects of poor housing. DESIGN: This was a post hoc analysis of data from a household interview survey. SETTING: A public sector housing estate on the outskirts of Glasgow. SUBJECTS: These comprised 114 men and 333 women aged between 17 and 65 from 451 households. MEASURES: Dependent variable: scoring > or = 5 on the 30 item general health questionnaire (GHQ30). Independent variables: s…
Women's smoking and measures of women's socio-economic status in the United Kingdom
Surveys of smoking in the United Kingdom point to an increasingly strong association between cigarette smoking and socio-economic status among both men and women. They have uncovered a clear class gradient in smoking prevalence, with high socio-economic status associated with low smoking prevalence. These surveys rely on a particular set of procedures to determine the socio-economic position of women. The paper enters a caveat about these procedu…

Assessing the need for health status measures
Because herbicide use was common to the workers in this cohort, we speculated on the biological plausibility of phenoxy acid herbicide exposure and the increased risk of suicide

Building alliances
The notion of community participation in health finds favour in many circles, since, lacking close definition, it can be interpreted in such a way as to be acceptable to all political persuasions. This paper explores some of the consequences of these multiple interpretations and gives examples from a community development and health promotion project in Scotland. Professional attitudes and behaviour and bureaucratic structures are seen as signifi…

The incidence of moulds within 525 dwellings in the United Kingdom
Airborne viable mould spore counts were determined for living rooms, kitchens and bedrooms within 503 council houses in Edinburgh and Glasgow (UK); at least one child lived in each house. Approximately one‐half of the 1709 rooms sampled contained 300 cfu m‐3, indicating a positive relationship between surface growth and air spore levels. The most common genera isolated from internal surfaces (including those from a further 22 London houses) were …

Subjective health indicators and health promotion
This article gives an account of subjective (perceived) health measurement based upon the development and use of an indicator known as the Nottingham Health Profile, an instrument that aims to show the subjective elements of the experience of health and illness by using the ordinary language of the intended respondent. The author discusses the possibility of using subjective health indicators for the assessment of health promotion activities and …
Association between parental smoking and infant morbidity
Association between parental smoking and infant morbidity SIR-A recent paper in the Journal by Ogsten et al (Vol 41, 21-25) examined associations between parental smoking, maternal age, feeding, heating type, and respiratory and alimentary illness in infants. The findings indicated several significant associations, although the purported effect of maternal smoking on symptoms was actually quite small. We were suprised that the explanations for the …
Perceived health
The need to find accurate and reliable indicators on which to base the planning, provision, and evaluation of health services gave impetus to the attempt to develop reliable and valid measures of the perceived health status of the consumers of health care. Subjective measures can provide an important complement to traditional statistics by giving direct access to the personal feelings of discomfort or distress that influence the use of health ser…
The Nottingham health profile
Reliability of a population survey tool for measuring perceived health problems
A study is described which tested the reliability of the Nottingham Health Profile, a standardised measure of perceived health status suitable for use with both large groups and individual patients. Patients with osteoarthrosis, uncomplicated by other diagnosed conditions, were given the questionnaire to fill in on two separate occasions four weeks apart. Analysis of data showed that all sections of the profile achieved a high level of reliabilit…
A quantitative approach to perceived health status
The current recognition of the importance of perceived health status as a predictor of need for, and utilisation of, health services has led to attempts to produce indicators which assess subjective rather than objective health problems. The development of the Nottingham Health Profile is described, together with a study which tested the validity of the instrument on four groups of elderly people differing in health status. The results showed tha…
The development of a subjective health indicator
Changing patterns of concern in medicine and health care have interacted with philosophic trends in social sciences and politics to create demands for new directions in the measurement of health. Traditional indicators such as morbidity and mortality are seen to require supplementation by more subjective assessments of need. The addition of subjective data, collected in a standardized way could enable those concerned to delineate more closely the…
