  • Introduction, comparison, and validation of Meta‐Essentials: A free and simple tool for meta‐analysis

Open Access•Robert Suurmond, Henk van Rhee et al.•ARTICLE•Research Synthesis Methods•2017

We present a new tool for meta‐analysis, Meta‐Essentials , which is free of charge and easy to use. In this paper, we introduce the tool and compare its features to other tools for meta‐analysis. We also provide detailed information on the validation of the tool. Although free of charge and simple, Meta‐Essentials automatically calculates effect sizes from a wide range of statistics and can be used for a wide range of meta‐analysis applications, …

  • Ceilings and Floors: Where Are There No Observations

    Open Access•Gary Goertz, Tony Hak et al.•ARTICLE•Sociological Methods & Research•2013•Cited by: 6•References: 51

There are situations where the data or the theory suggest or require, respectively, that one estimate the boundary lines that separate regions of observations from regions of no observations. Of particular interest are ceiling or floor lines. For example, many theories use terms such as veto player, constraint, only if, and so on, which suggest ceilings. Ceiling hypotheses have a nonstandard form claiming the probability of Y will be zero for all…

  • Listen to their answers! Response behaviour in the measurement of physical and role functioning

Open Access•Marjan J Westerman, Tony Hak et al.•ARTICLE•Quality of Life Research•2008

Terminally ill patients evaluate their functioning in terms of what they perceive to be normal under the circumstances. Their answers can be interpreted in terms of change in the appraisal process (Rapkin and Schwartz 2004; Health and Quality of Life Outcomes, 2, 14). More care should be taken in assessing the quality of a set of questions about physical and role functioning

  • Small-cell lung cancer patients are just ‘a little bit’ tired: Response shift and self-presentation in the measurement of fatigue

    Open Access•Marjan J Westerman, Anne‐Mei The et al.•ARTICLE•Quality of Life Research•2007

In addition to response shift, this study suggests that 'self-presentation' might be an important mechanism affecting QoL measurement, particularly during phases when a new equilibrium needs to be found

Tony Hak, Kees Van Der Veer et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Social…•2006•Cited by: 2•References: 1

In this paper the results of a validation study of the Dutch and Norwegian versions of the Illegal Aliens (IA) Scale are discussed. The main objective is to evaluate the usefulness of the ThreeStep TestInterview (TSTI) as a pretesting method in a validation study. The TSTI is a new technique specifically developed to detect problems with selfcompletion questionnaires. The studys aims were twofold: (1) to evaluate the usefulness of the TSTI for de…

Des sources différentes de non-réponse engendrent differents types de biais. Dans les enquêtes par courrier. on ne sait pas si la proportion des non-retours doit être attribuée aux échecs d'accès ou aux refus de répondre. • Heroin addiction careers: Downward spiral or controlled descent

    Open Access•Anne Eland-Goossensen, Tony Hak et al.•ARTICLE•Contemporary Drug Problems•1997•References: 5

For the public and for most policy makers there is no doubt that the career of heroin addiction necessarily involves gradually losing everything one has: health, income, a home, a stable network of relatives and friends, and, last but not least, any sense of self as a moral agent. Although this view is factually incorrect insofar as there are examples of controlled heroin use without such negative effects (cf. Zinberg, 1984), the image of the add…

  • The interactional form of professional dominance

    Open Access•Tony Hak•ARTICLE•Sociology of Health & Illness•1994•Cited by: 12•References: 9

Studies of 'the interactional form of professional dominance' portray particular conversational phenomena, such as interruptions and specific types of questions, as effective means by which doctors inhibit patients from getting the floor. Such strategies, however, depend on the patient's cooperation and, hence, cannot assure the doctor's dominance. In this paper it is argued that the Freidsonian concept of 'professional dominance' does not in the…
