  • Student activism, translocality, and social justice

    Gritt B Nielsen, Thierry M Luescher•ARTICLE•Globalisation Societies and…•2025•References: 8

This introductory article frames the Globalisation, Societies and Education special issue on ‘Student activism, translocality and social justice.’ We discuss the three central concepts – student activism, translocality, and social justice – and consider how they intersect in contemporary student political engagement. Rather than restricting student activism to large-scale protest events, we highlight how it also takes shape through everyday pract…

  • Student Affairs Advancement of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals

Lisa Bardill Moscaritolo, Thierry M Luescher et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of college student…•2025

Commitment of higher education to the public good through research, teaching, and civic engagement is essential to advancing the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). We conducted a global online survey with Student Affairs practitioners in more than 50 countries and found that over half of our respondents have made SDGs a priority in their work, although with considerable variance in awareness, knowledge, and use of SDGs. Overall…

  • Rapid Photovoice as a Close-Up, Emancipatory Methodology in Student Experience Research: The Case of the Student Movement Violence and Wellbeing Study

    Open Access•Thierry M Luescher, Angelina Wilson Fadiji et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021•Cited by: 2•References: 45

In this paper, we critically reflect on our conceptualization and operationalization of 'rapid photovoice' as a close-up, emancipatory, action research methodology which has multiple, intersecting social-justice goals; and consider the methodology's potential for helping to achieve such goals. We first consider photovoice in relation to its typical use in public health research, as well as in prior research into student experiences of higher educ…

Thierry M Luescher, Thierry Luescher et al.•ARTICLE•Politikon•2017•Cited by: 19•References: 6

How can we begin to make sense of the diversity of hashtag student movements that sprang up in South Africa in the course of 2015? In this paper we start by presenting key elements of Altbach's empirical theory of student movements and Castells' conceptualisation of internet-age networked movements to propose as conceptual point of departure the notion of 'internet-age student movement'. At the case of the campus-based #SteynMustFall and #UFSFees…

  • Student representation and multiparty politics in African higher education

    Thierry M Luescher, Thierry M Luescher-Mamashela et al.•ARTICLE•Studies in Higher Education•2014•Cited by: 3•References: 10

The transition from one-party rule and other forms of authoritarianism to multiparty democracy in the 1990s has had a profound impact on the organisation and role of student politics in Africa. Against the background of student involvement in African politics in the twentieth century, leading up to student participation in Africa's ‘second liberation’ in the early 1990s, the paper analyses the organisation of student governments, student represen…

  • Student representation in university decision making: Good Reasons, a New Lens

    Thierry M Luescher, Thierry M Luescher-Mamashela•ARTICLE•Studies in Higher Education•2013•Cited by: 8•References: 17

This article outlines the main cases for and related objections against student representation in university governance found in the relevant literature, and proposes a way in which variations in student representation within institutions may be understood and justified. It contextualises the modern origins of student representation in the experience of university democratisation of the 1960s and early 1970s. By means of a review of scholarship, …

  • The culture of governance in South African public higher education

Martin Hall, Ashley Symes et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Higher Education…•2004•Cited by: 4

The South African public higher education system is at a point of transition as the mould of segregation is broken through a process of mergers and incorporations. This paper reports a study of governance at this transitional stage. Using case studies of 12 institutions, representative of the system as a whole, four types of governance were identified, differentiated by the representivity of those participating in decision-making processes, organ…
