A Guide to Conducting Online Focus Groups via Reddit
Now more than ever there exists a need to conduct data collection online in a safe environment while ensuring that methodological rigor is not sacrificed. Widely available online platforms allow for text-based focus groups to be conducted quickly, easily, and efficiently, but protocols must be maintained to ensure they do not descend into casual observation of naturally occurring conversations. Various online platform options and their merits are…
Demographics, Learner Characteristics, and Use of Wearable Devices
This case study was intended to explore whether wearable device use is associated with their demographic factors (e.g., device ownership and gender), using undergraduate students in a Hispanic Serving Institution. Preliminary findings of this two-way contingency table analysis suggested that students who own the device(s) are more likely to use it for school. Males are more likely to use the wearables for learning in spite of a marginal effect si…
Understanding how university student perceptions of resources affect technology acceptance in online learning courses
The purpose of this empirical research was to use the perceived resources and technology acceptance model (PRATAM; Ku, 2009) to observe and measure students’ beliefs on using the WebCT online learning system (OLS) in two WebCT courses offered at a large university in the south-eastern United States. PRATAM was replicated from previous research to address the factors of perceived resources (R), perceived usefulness (U), perceived ease of use (EOU)…

Sensitivity of Fit Indices to Model Misspecification and Model Types
The search for cut-off criteria of fit indices for model fit evaluation (e.g., Hu & Bentler, 1999 Hu, L. and Bentler, P. M. 1999. Cutoff criteria for fit indexes in covariance structure analysis: Conventional criteria versus new alternatives. Structural Equation Modeling., 6: 1–55. [Taylor & Francis Online], [Web of Science ®] , [Google Scholar]) assumes that these fit indices are sensitive to model misspecification, but not to different types of…
The Search for "Optimal" Cutoff Properties
This study is a partial replication of L. Hu and P. M. Bentler's (1999) fit criteria work. The purpose of this study was twofold: (a) to determine whether cut-off values vary according to which model is the true population model for a dataset and (b) to identify which of 13 fit indexes behave optimally by retaining all of the correct models while simultaneously rejecting all of the misspecified models in a manner invariant across sample size and …
Sensitivity of Fit Indexes to Misspecified Structural or Measurement Model Components
In previous research (Hu & Bentler, 1998, 1999), 2 conclusions were drawn: standardized root mean squared residual (SRMR) was the most sensitive to misspecified factor covariances, and a group of other fit indexes were most sensitive to misspecified factor loadings. Based on these findings, a 2-index strategy-that is, SRMR coupled with another index-was proposed in model fit assessment to detect potential misspecification in both the structural a…
An Empirical Investigation of the Efficacy of Multimedia Instruction in Counseling Skill Development
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of multimedia instruction on students' counseling skill development. The participants were 73 beginning-level counselor education students (20 men and 53 women, ages ranging from 24 to 47 years). Ratings of students' pre- and posttest video counseling tapes were used to assess the effects of the multimedia approach. The results found that there was no statistically significant difference among …
Relative Roles of Cognitive Ability and Practical Intelligence in the Prediction of Success
Initial investigations into the construct of practical intelligence have identified a new general factor of practical intelligence (gp), which is believed to be independent of general cognitive ability. This construct, gp, is also believed to be a better predictor of success than cognitive ability, personality, or any combination of variables independent of gp. The existence of this construct and its independence from Spearman's g is, however, un…
