  • Liberal Democracy Needs Religion

    Open Access•Dennis Vanden Auweele•ARTICLE•Kantian Review•2022

Liberal democracy has been experiencing a crisis of representation over the last decade, as a disconnect has emerged from some of the foundational principles of liberalism such as personal freedom and equality. In this article, I argue that in the third part of Kant’s Religion within the Boundaries of Mere Reason we can find resources to better understand and counteract this crisis of liberal democracy. Kant gives a powerful argument to include a…

  • Sacredness and Aesthetics

    Open Access•Dennis Vanden Auweele•ARTICLE•Modern Theology•2021

Heidegger famously asserted that one cannot pray to the God of onto‐theo‐logic. God is here made into a determinate concept, the highest idea of reason, and thereby loses its constitutive transcendence and personhood. To think of God appropriately after Heidegger means to think of God in a way amenable to prayer. It is widely recognized that deconstruction does not fare well on this score as it turns prayer into some form of meditation/contemplat…

  • Past and Present Political Theology

Dennis Vanden Auweele, Miklós Vassányi•BOOK•Past and Present Political Theology•2020

"This book demonstrates how discussions of Political Theology have been a constant feature throughout philosophical modernity and that they continue to impact contemporary political debates. By tracing the historical roots and detailing the contemporary outworking of Political Theology in Europe, it contends that this growing field requires a broader "canon" in order for it to mature. Political Theology is shown here to be about the diversity of …

  • Schopenhauer on Christ, Suffering and the Negation of the Will

Jonathan Head, Dennis Vanden Auweele•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2020

This paper seeks to illuminate Schopenhauer’s notion of the negation or denial of the will by investigating the figure of the saint within his philosophy. We argue that various discussions in Schopenhauer’s works of the possible role of Christ as exemplar reveals an underlying Christological understanding of self-denial as a model for the saint. The connection between Schopenhauer’s approach to Christ and Kant’s Christology in Religion within the…

  • Schopenhauer and the Later Schelling in Dialogue on Mythology and Religion

    Dennis Vanden Auweele•ARTICLE•The Journal of Religion•2017•References: 9

In order to have a fruitful dialogue, all participants ought to agree on some things and disagree on others. Without some agreement, there is no vantage point from which to start the conversation; without some disagreement, the dialogue might as well be a monologue. Do the later Schelling and Schopenhauer meet these criteria? More specifically, are their respective analyses of the allegorical (Schopenhauer) or tautegorical (Schelling) truth of re…
