In this video I present conversations with Claudio Oliveira, one of the visitors who came through the UFRGS Social-Sciences course Visual and Image-Based Anthropology students' exhibition on appreciable ways of living in Porto Alegre, Brazil. Claudio's images, gaze and conversations are mixed with images from the show. Stories, spaces and time foster circular communication for new resonances among those who see them. I invite you to converse with…

Some Intergenerational Comparisons in Two Ethnic Communities in Israel
This article reports the responses of 30 fathers and 30 sons in two ethnic communities in Israel on matters pertaining to the sons' education, future occupation, marriage, religious and political commitments and plans for involvement in the life of the community. The two communities are urban Israeli Arabs (i.e., Arabs who have lived in Israel at least since the establishment of the state) and ultra-Orthodox Jews, whose families came originally f…
Prisoners on the Jury
This study represents another chapter in our larger study of the reactions of juries to criminal cases involving the defense of insanity. The larger study focuses primarily on the reaction of persons drawn by lot from the community at large who are serving on their regular period of jury duty.1 The subsidiary studies, of which this is one, describe the reactions of special groups to the defense of insanity. These groups are special because they a…
Mental Patients as Jurors
In previous articles we have reported the effects of education, sex, and socioeconomic status on jury verdicts. In the present paper we shall consider the effects on verdicts of still another variable: the personality of the jurors. The subjects to be reported upon are institutionalized mental patients. Obviously, in the day to day operations of the court, such persons would rarely, if ever, serve on regular juries. While we have some interest in…
